Notes for J
OHANN MATTHIAS GLASS:
Johann Glass, emmigrated from somewhere near Berlin, Germany to the American Colonies, perhaps at Philadelphia between 1768 and 1771. In 1771 he is listed as a freedman in Salisbury Twp. Lancaster County, Pa. In 1776 he served in the Lancaster County Militia and his name appears on the tax list of Menallen Twp. York, Pa.
From 1777-78 he served in the American Revolutionary War. His pay was $6. 3/8 a month. as a private in Capt. Joseph Erwin's Co. 9th Reg. of Pa. foot soldiers. (Pg. 159 of the official Record of the Soldiers of the American Revolution buried in Ohio.)
From 1786-1800 in Franklin Twp. York, Pa. he owned 123 acres, a log house, and a bank barn. He appears in the 1790 Census of Pa. He sold the 123 acres in 1801.
In 1805 he migrated to Beaver Twp. Mahoning County, Ohio. He built the first grist mill on Mill Creek on the Mahoning river above Frederick. According to the History of Trumball and Mahoning Counties, Johann gave the name, Berlin, to the area as he desired to have his adopted home bear a name that would remind him of his native homeland. Johann served as trustee and election judge in Berlin Township on April 7, 1828.
The first grist mill was destroyed by fire. Isaac Wilson bought the mill site from Johann and put up a flour mill. The family ran it for several years until it was purchased by George Schilling and was then known as Schillings Mill. It was the only grist mill ever built in Berlin Township.
Johann's thirteen children's births and baptisms are recorded in the Records of the Lutheran and Reformed Church at Arendtville, York County, Pa.
Johann and his wife Effa are buried at Old Springfield Cemetary in Mahoning County, located at New Middletown on Rt. 170 south of Poland, Ohio.
Other members of the Johann household may have been buried at Mount Moriah Lutheran Church Cemetary (also now known as Berlin North Cemetery) located on Rt. 534 north of Berlin Center. Upon visual inspection of gravestones in this cemetery in April, 2001, the following names were engraved on various stones, however no direct connection can be made to Johann; 1) Wallas Glass, son of J.W. & Susanna Glass- died Sept. 15, 1842 (aged 6 mo. 9 days), 2) Simon Glass, son of Peter and Christina Glass- died Feb. 25, 1838 (aged 13 mo.), 3) Samantha Glass, daughter of J.W. & Susanna Glass- died Sept. 1, 1836 (aged 2 mo. 25 days), 4)Hannah Glass, wife of Mathias J. Glass- died Aug. 4, 1865 (aged 62 yrs. 3 days). (Kevin Langan - April, 2001)
