6. ELDER LEWIS3 GLASS (JOHN2, JOHANN MATTHIAS1) was born February 14, 1810 in Butler Township, Ohio, and died January 15, 1893 in Knox Township, Columbiana County, Ohio. He married FANNY HEASTAND. She was born February 11, 1807, and died October 23, 1888 in Knox Township, Columbiana County, Ohio.

Notes for E
LDER LEWIS GLASS:
Elder Lewis Glass and his wife Fanny, made their living on a farm in Butler Township and later in Knox Township of Columbiana County. Ohio was still an infant state and life on the pioneer homesteads required stamina and faithful personalities. They were active members of the German Baptist Church, which was an ancestor to the Bretheren Church and the Church of the Bretheren. This protestant group dates back to a movement under Abraham Mack in Swartzenau, Germany about 1708. Under the leadership of Peter Becker, some German Bretheren entered the American Colonies in 1719 and settled at Germantown, Pa. In 1881 a division resulted in the two denominations.
Elder (or Reverend) Lewis Glass was an overseeing pastor of the Church of the Bretheren at Reading, Ohio in Knox Twp. German Baptist predecessors held meetings in homes in Knox Twp. as early as 1810. The Reading Bretheren Church was erected in 1860 with Elder Lewis Glass as the first preacher. He and Fanny no doubt continued to operate their farm. Reverend Glass served as the overseeing pastor from 1870 to 1889, and guided the re-modeling in 1878 to increase seating to 600 persons.
The following appears in a church history:
(The keeping of the records was not brought about until the year 1870 when Elder Lewis Glass accepted the oversight. He was assisted by Elder John A. Clement, S.B. Stuckey and Aaron Shively second degree ministers and Eli Stroup, B.F. Bowser and C. Hiner in the first degree. All went well until about 1882, the time of the division in the brotherhood. This church was seriously affected and many were lost to the progressives.) Pg. 69
Mill Creek (Mahoning Overseer- 1874-78)
"The church was greatly helped by visiting bretheren from the adjoining churches, amoung whom were Elders Swinehart, Kahler, Shoemaker, Glass, and others. In 1873 a new house of worship was built at Bethel." Pg. 37
District Meeting 1874
"Bretheren Glass, Byers, and Clement were appointed a committee to procure a home for a minister in the Trumball County Church." Pg. 325
Elder Lewis Glass held the position of oversight until he was asked to be relieved, which was done by consent of District Meeting in 1889.
Elder Lewis and his wife Fanney are buried at the Reading Church Cemetery located on the north side of Homeworth-Georgetown Road in Knox Township, Columbiana County.
