Notes for E
MMETT BLAINE GLASS:
Emmett Blaine Glass, was given his middle name after James G. Blaine, a candidate for President, who was a favorite of his father, John Benton Glass. Emmett lived all of his childhood and youth in North Georgetown completing eight grades. About the age of five, he may have suffered Rhumatic Fever, which was not properly diagnosed, and may have been the reason his heart was enlarged.
Emmet graduated from Alliance Business College about 1922. He served in the U.S. Army from Aug. 18, 1918 to Jan. 30, 1919. During military training he had a compound fracture of the leg, which never properly healed.
After marrying Anna Weaver in 1923, they rented a home in Alliance until they purchased a newly built house in Homeworth. This property was surrendered by necessity during the Depression of 1929. They then lived on the Henry Weaver farm at New Chambersburg. Later in 1936, they moved back to Homeworth to a farm.
During the 30's, Emmett was employed by the Eckert Dairy, Alliance Manufacturing, and was given temporary assistance through the Works Projects Administration. When World War II opened up defense employment, Emmett worked at Transue-Williams in Alliance.
In 1946, Emmett purchased the Weaver Farm at New Chambersburg, now reduced to 20 acres. Emmett took outdoor employment to reduce tension of the factory enviroment. He was under a physician's care for duodinal ulcers for a number of years.
About 1950 he became employed as a bookkeeper for the Homeworth Feed Mill. This was the first professional use he was able to make of his business college training. He appeared to really feel fulfilled in this employ. He was engaged in this at the time of his death in 1957.
In 1953, Emmett and Anna had purchased the former parsonage on West St. in Homeworth. This was in Anna's name until her death in 1970. Emmett served many years as treasurer and trustee of Mt. Carmel Evangelical Church in Homeworth. He was involved in the first remodeling program and assisted with plans for a new ediface, but did not live to see its completion.
