 Includes NotesNotes for Absalom Hooper:
Was one of first settlers in Davidson County, Tenn.
Notes for ABSALOM (SR.) HOOPER:
The following is from Anne Goodwin

The father Absolum moved to the
Natchez territory by 1774 at the VERY latest, and had wife and children
there. (source: British West Florida land records). This father Absolum
was involved in a murder there in 1774 and barely escaped hanging (although
his brother Enos was hung in British West Florida for the incident-the
source for this is the British governor's records of the West Florida
colony). There are records again showing Absolum lived there in 1780.
Absolum remained in the Natchez territory until 1783 when he moved from
Natchez territory directly to Davidson County. This statement about the
move is from family testimony given in 1830s and published in several
standard histories of Tennessee written in the late 1820s to 1850s. There
is also federal testimony in land claims made for the land owned in the
Natchez territory (testimony dates 1804-1812).

Also, Absolum Hooper Sr of Nashville did, on a single deed in Davidson
County, have a wife named Elizabeth. I have never found where the surname
Wiley came from - have just seen the info repeated and repeated. There is
circumstantial evidence that she was not a first wife, and that she may have
even been a third wife, who already had children by her previous husband. I
have a good candidate for her identification, but all evidence is
circumstantial. Whatever, when I put up the web page for the 1850 Humphreys
census, I will not mention her name as the mother of Absolum, Jr. or for any
of his brothers. This is merely an alert to you that I am aware of the
suggested identification of Elizabeth Wiley Hooper as the mother, but that I
am unwilling to put that info into writing until more conclusive evidence
appears.

Notes for SINAH MELINA HOOPER:
Married in Davidson Co., TN, June 4, 1795. In Ramsey's "The Annals of Tennessee" he mentions the arrival of emigrants to the Cumberland in 1783. Among this group were Philip Alston and Absalom Hooper. They came from the Natchez District. Need help in determining the parents of Sinah Hooper. Sinah and husband returned to Natchez in early 1800's, later moved to south LA.

Notes:

(1) The clerk copying this will made several errors. First, of course, is the misspelling of the name of the testator as Absalom Hooper. Nor was the clerk consistent, using Absolom, Absolam, Absalam, and the abbreviation Absm for the given name. The other problem is the first letter of the given name for Hetty Jones. The given name of Absalom Hooper's daughter was Letitia or Leticia, with nickname Letty. Her first marriage was to George Cook(e). After his death, she appears as Leaticia Cook, administratrix, with Absalom Hooper and Isom Allen Parker as her securities, on 11 July 1797. Davidson County, Tennessee marriage records show Aquilla Jones married Lettie Cooke on 16 April 1798.
(2) Davidson County records show that James Stuart married Sallie Hooper on 4 February 1797.
(3) On 25 November 1765, Absalom Hooper had married Elizabeth Holmes in the Long Canes or Russell Creek area of South Carolina. How Mrs. Elizabeth (Holmes) Hooper was related to Joseph Holmes has not yet been determined.
