From Eldon Hatcher:

James Riley Hatcher, listed as son of James and Charlotte, is their adopted son. When Charlotte's sister Louisa Craft died, Louisa had asked Charlotte to raise James Riley for a year. Louisa was the wife of John Landon Hatcher, brother of James Alfred Hatcher, so James Riley was the blood nephew of James and Charlotte.

At the end of the year, James and Charlotte asked John if they could raise James and this was agreed to. See John Landon Hatcher/Louisa Craft family for descendants of James Riley Hatcher.
