The Vaughan/Harris Connection

Associated families: High, Hairgrove,
Bell, Christy, Weaver, Green, Baird,
LaQuey, Lemons,Foster

This is an on-going project to find and document the ancestors of two families, James Gunn Vaughan and Sallie Emma Bell, and Rufus Marion Harris and Lula Lee High. The Vaughan/Harris connection began in the summer of 1931. Mr Vaughan would not allow his daughters to date unless accompanied by one of their brothers. So Roy Lee Vaughan and his brother Lonnie went along on Veda Jewell and Inez's first date with Hilliard (Hick) Harris and Carroll McAlpine;
Opal Harris went along to keep the boys company. The rest is history, and a confusing family tree. In the summer of 1932, Jewel and Hick married in June, Opal and Roy Lee in July and Inez and Carroll in August. From these multiple unions came a host of off-spring and blessings, one of which is the annual reunion of relatives and descendants of both families.

Grandma Harris loved little children and baby chickens (in that order). She had a way of making both feel safe and warm. There can never be a more secure feeling than snuggling down in Grandma's feather bed as she softly sang:
"Blessed Assurance, Jesus is mine!
Oh, what a foretaste of glory devine
Heir of salvation, purchase of God,
Born of His spirit, washed in His blood."

Grandmama Vaughan taught a ladies Bible study at University Bapptist Church, in Arlington, TX for many years. The following is an excerpt from one of the last lessons she taught:
"But Christ liveith in me and the life
I now live in the flesh. I live by the
faith of the Son of God who loved me and
gave himself for me and when the time comes
for us to leave this world, will we be able
to say with Paul, I have fought a good fight,
I have finished my course, I have kept the
faith.

What a heritage to leave? I hope my legacy is as grand.
