Descendants of John Laracy Generation No. 1 1. JOHN2 LARACY (LARACY1) He married MARGARET HOGAN. Child of JOHN LARACY and MARGARET HOGAN is: 2. i. THOMAS3 LARACY, b. Abt. 1813, Galway Ireland; d. June 06, 1867, Wellington Vale. Generation No. 2 2. THOMAS3 LARACY (JOHN2, LARACY1) was born Abt. 1813 in Galway Ireland, and died June 06, 1867 in Wellington Vale. He married BRIDGET MULLALLY June 12, 1842 in Blue Mountains Aust,Hartley, daughter of PATRICK MULLALLY and MARY MAHER. She was born Abt. 1818 in Kilcock County Kildare, and died October 05, 1902 in Lismore. Notes for THOMAS LARACY: Thomas Larressy,Laracy was born 1813 in Galway Ireland, the son of John Laracy and Margaret Hogan. He received little education and could neither read nor write. This led to an enormous variation in the spelling of his surname. Thomas was listed as LARNEY on his shipping record and as LARCEY on his tombstone. His many descendants in Australia have aquired further variations and are to be found as LARRACCY,LARRESSY,LARRESCY,LARRISSY,LARRACY,LARCEY,LARACEY,LARSEY,and so on- a researcher`s nightmare.. Thomas was raised in a poor Irish Catholic home and later worked as a stable boy, In 1834 at the age of 21,he was arrested for "stealing money" and placed in prison, He was tried on 1.8.1834 in County Galway and sentenced to 7 years transportation to Australia. This was a first offence for this young man who was described as being 5` 4" tall, ruddy freckled complexion, light brown hair,hazel/grey eyes and with a scar on the left hand of his forehead;horizontal scar right side of same;scar between fore and middle fingers of right hand,- perhaps relics of a kick from a horse,It is not known weather Thomas spent ten months in goal or in the squalid conditions of some hulk whilst awaiting transportation. On 12.06.1835,along with 150 other convicts,he sailed from Cork on the ship ( Blackwell ). Master of the ship was Dalrymple Dowson and the Surgeon-Superintendent, John Love. Despite dreadful conditions on board and the length of the journey, all arrived safely at Sydney on the 29.09.1835.. In 1840 he was granted a Ticket of Leave which allowed him to work in the Scone District for one year from 01.08.1840 ( No 1464 ). His Certificate of Freedom ( No 178 ) was granted 08.02.1842 and soon after Thomas took a wife, Bridget Mullally,.. Bridget was born abt 1818 at Kilcock County Kildare, the daughter of Patrick Mullally and Mary Mahert. Bridget was from a Catholic background and worked as a house servant. In October 1841 after the death of her father, she decided to emgrate to the Colony and on the 01.10.1841 sailed from Liverpool England,on board the ( Carthagian ) .Thomas and Bridget were married on the 12.06.1842 at Hartley in the foothills of the Blue Mountains in NSW. The Catholic priest from Bathurst, Father Michael Kavanagh, conducted the ceremony which was witnesses all gave their addresses as Mt York..It is not known how long they resided at Mt York, but by 1844 Thomas and Bridget had moved on to the Bathurst area where their first child Mary was born on the11.01.1844,and baptised on 23.04.1844. Sponsors for the child were Bridget Nicholson and Michael Rileh ? . The family address at that time was Wiseman`s Creek.. On 08.11.1847 two further daughters were baptised by Father Thomas Slattery - Margaret born 1845,and Cathrine who was born 18.10.1847. At this time the family was living at Fish River..No doubt that these were very hard times for Thomas, trying to eke out a living and provide for an ever increasing family..If only he had had a skilled trade to follow or a Grant of land to farm, this story might have been very different,.At a time NSW history when just being Irish was almost a punishable offence and when ex-convicts were constantly under scrutiny by the authorities,it is hardly surprising to learn that Thomas was once more in trouble with the law and imprisoned at Bathurst.. Unfortunately, the court records for this period have not survived so we do not know his crime, It is likely that his sentence was one of three years, and that it did not go smoothly for in August 1848,Thomas was given a further sentence of six months in irons at Bathurst gaol.. After his release a son Michael was born on the 14.05.1852, However the happiness of this event and the return to normal family life was to be short lived..In October 1852 Thomas and a colleaque were involved in a attempted highway robbery near Saltwater Creek,on the road from Bathurst to O`Connell.. A graphic account of the incident was reported in the Bathurst Free Press: Satuday 15.01.1853 HIGHWAY ROBBERY - Thomas Larissey was committed on Monday last for an assault and attempt at highway robbery, committed about three months ago upon the person of William Arrow,on the road from Bathurst to O`Connell, It appears from Arrow`s evidence that he was overtaken by the prisoner and another man when travelling with a bullock team near Saltwater Creek, when the prisoner knocked him down and proceeded to rifle his pockets, but finding only a sixpence, he treated him to a glass of rum, at the same time reminding him that if he "Peached" it would be all the worse for him, About the same time, and at 4 o`clock of the morning the prisoner called at Mr Bonner`s Stockman`s Inn,Bathurst, in company with Sinnett, who now stands committed for robbing Mr Whelan near O`Connell Plains.. Both put their horses in the stables and procured some refreshment..After Sinnett`s departure the prisoner presented a bank receipt to him and asked for an advance of 2 pounds upon it,his horse, saddle and bridle which Mr Bonner regarded as security, leaving a valueless piece of paper as a forty shilling consideration. Thomas was sentenced to 3 years hard labour on the roads - held in Bathurst Gaol 27.12.1852,committed 10.01.1853, forwarded to Sydney on 21.03.1853, ten days later admitted to Darlinghurst Gaol, and then sent to Cockatoo Island.. His little son Michael was three years old before he again saw his father.. Thomas sentence must have been equally as punishing to Bridget and their four small children who were left to cope with difficult conditions..We can scarcely imagine their loneliness and hardship, and marvel at the courage and streagth of Bridget in caring and providing for the children..She must have possessed extraordinary faith.. Thomas served his sentence and rejoined his family,it was not long until another daughter Bridget was born in 1856 followed by their last child Elizabeth Ann on the 08.11.1858..This last baby was born at Glen Elgin and when registering her birth,Thomas gave his occupation as miner, In the 1850`s Glen Elgin was a station and also a gold field so it does seem that the search for gold was the driving force in the family moving from Bathurst to Glen Elgin.. The Station is siuated to the east of Glen Innes near to what is now the main Glen Innes/Grafton Road..While there Bridget acted as midwife for the area, a role she was to continue later at Morven,Dundee and Wellington Vale. Their stay at Glen Elgin was short, for in 1861,they brought their family to the large property,Wellington Vale, northwest of Glen Innes on the Deepwater/Emmaville Road, Thomas worked on the property for six years as a farm servant until his death on the 06.06.1867,aged 53 years..He had been ill for five weeks and the cause of his death was given as Rheumatism..This last six years of Thomas`s life was probably the happiest and most stable for Thomas and Bridget, and saw much family celebration with the marriages of three daughters and the arrival on nine grand-children..Little did Thomas realise that a further 54 grand-children would be added to his family.. Thomas`s final resting place was Wellington Vale cemetery where a stone has been erected to the memory of Thomas Larcey - fated to the end by the mis-spelling of his name. Folowing Thomas death in 1867,his widow Bridget was left at Wellington Vale with their three youngest children,Michael aged 15,Bridget aged 11,and Elizabeth aged 9, It appears that Bridget decided to move to Green Swamp near Tenterfield to be near her daughter Margaret, and son in law John Larracy,Bridget helped by her family had finally built up a holding of 479 acres and owned 8 horses,20 cattle and 525 sheep..After a long life of struggle we can imagine her sence of happiness and fulfillment in being surrounded by children and grand children, and seeing her family all happily married and settled. In her last years,Bridget known to her family as " Bula " moved to Gundurimba, south of Lismore where she died on the 05.10.1902 aged 84 years. Her death was registered by her daughter Bridget who married David Harley Jnr,she is buried in the Old Catholic Cemetery adjoining Lismore Golf Course, now known as Barham Memorial Park, along with her daughter Mary McMillan and son inlaw Donald McMillan... Her husband John Larracy or Larecey was 31 years old, a labourer who worked on nereby Ranger`s Valley Station., I thought that John must have been a distant relation, however I discovered that he arrived in Australia in 1856 with a brother,Thomas on the ship " Persia " sons of William Laracey and Hannah ( Annie ) Corcoran of Thomastown,County Kilkenny, A further two brothers,Patrick and William arrived on the " Queen of the East " in 1864,all four brothers finally settled in Tenterfield.
