Notes for T
HOMAS EDWARDS:
Thomas Edwards was born Sept 20, 1829 at Llanuwchllyn (near Bala) in Merionethshire, Wales. The family farm there is still in operation today, and is known as Drws Nant, just southeast of Lake Bala. Thomas emigrated from Wales in 1850 at age 21 and went to Rome, Oneida County, NY. His parents were Edward Edwards and Elizabeth Thomas Edwards, who stayed behind in Wales. Of Thomas Edwards' nine siblings only two are known to have followed him to America- John Edwards who married in Wales and emigrated in 1852- and Jane Edwards, who married a man named Lewis and ended up eventually in Crystal Lake, Minnesota. Thomas Edwards may be present in the 1850 census of Rome, Oneida County New York in the George Williams household at age 23, a farmer, in a neighborhood of carpenters and laborers. In 1859 he was involved in the construction of Bethania Church in the Welch community of Marcy, Oneida County, New York where his brother John was a church trustee.

Ellinor (Ellen) Williams was born May 22, 1836 in North Wales and emigrated in 1858 at age 22 to Marcy, Oneida County, NY. Her older brother John Williams married Thomas Edwards' neice Elizabeth Edwards so Ellen Williams shows up on the 1860 Oneida County, NY census as a boarder in her married older brother's house. Ellen's father was Robert Williams, born in Wales, and her mother (maiden name O'Connor) was born in England, of Scotch-Irish descent. It is not currently known if Ellen's parents or siblings other than John came along to America with her.

Thomas married Ellen July 27, 1860 in Bethania Church in Marcy, Oneida County, NY by Reverand John R. Griffith. Their first two children were born in the Marcy area- Edward J. Edwards November 17, 1861 and Mary J. Edwards September 25, 1863. The family then moved to Emmet township, Dodge County, Wisconsin where Thomas Edwards worked as a carpenter (perhaps in the village of Watertown). Thomas was drafted into Company E of the 6th Wisconsin Veteran Volunteer Infantry on October 11, 1864, at which time he was 35 years old with fair complexion, blue eyes, dark brown hair and stood 5 feet 6 1/2 inches tall. The company he joined was involved with the siege of Petersburg, Virginia, and it was there at Hatcher's Run four months later on February 6, 1865 that he had an enemy rifle ball graze the top of his head while laying down in battle in front of the rebel line. He was hospitalized until April 19, 1865 and honorably discharged July 14, 1865 at the end of the war. About a year after returning home from his Civil War service, Thomas' third child was born at Emmet- Margaret Anna Edwards on July 24, 1866. Thomas Edwards' sister Jane Edwards married a Welch farmer named John L. Lewis around 1866, and had her first child around 1867 in Wisconsin, probably in Emmet township close to her brother.

Thomas and Ellen Edwards then moved around 1867 to a Welch community in Butternut Valley township, Blue Earth County, Minnesota and farmed there for about ten years. Thomas' sister Jane Lewis and her family had a farm in the next township- Cambria- on Section 26, Township 109N, Range 29W. Thomas and Ellen had two more children in Blue Earth County- John William Edwards on May 6, 1869 and Richard Thomas Edwards on October 29, 1871. In June 1872 the US Congress passed a law giving homestead land to honorably discharged soldiers of the Civil War. On May 21, 1875 Thomas applied for homestead land under this act and received 160 acres in the Sodus township of Lyon County, Minnesota about 75 miles west of his farm in Butternut Valley- specifically the NW 1/4 of Section 34, Township 110, Range 41, and also received a homestead lot in the town of Garvin just south of this- Lot 17 of Block 2. That summer, Thomas put his carpentry skills to work, and fashioned a home on the land for them to live in. The family moved into this house in December 1875, and here their last child was born- Sarah Elizabeth Edwards- on November 29, 1876. Ultimately Thomas built a house 16 feet by 24 feet 12 feet high with a 16 foot addition, as well as a barn, granary, fencing, and dug a well. Thomas' sister Jane Lewis and her family stayed in Cambria township of Blue Earth County, and later retired nearby in Lake Crystal.

In 1879, at age 50, Thomas Edwards applied for a Civil War disability pension for severe headaches at night and during hot weather due to his service-related gunshot wound of the head. A physical exam showed him to be 5 feet 5 inches tall, to weigh 150 pounds, and to have a 2 inch groove on the top of his head that was tender and scarred. He was allowed a $6 per month pension after federal approval in 1881, retroactive to 1865. Thomas became a naturalized American citizen at the courthouse at Marshall in 1881 (a requirement to obtaining title to homesteaded land). On March 10,1883 after showing proof of residence and improvements on his land to the county, plus with the testimony of two reliable neighbors, he received final patent to his 160 acre homestead farm. At some point he purchased 80 acres closeby (the S 1/2 of the SW 1/4 of Section 33, Township 110, Range 41) as well as 10 acres in the SE 1/4 of the SE 1/4 of the SE 1/4 of Section 2, Township 109, Range 41. Thomas's son Richard later remembered taking waggonloads of grain by oxen with his father to the mill in Lynd 10 miles away so that the grain could be ground into flour, a trip that would last 3 days. In 1887, Thomas Edwards' Civil War disability pension was increased to $8 per month.

Thomas and Ellen's 6 children all married neighbors as follows:
-Mary married ? Wilford sometime before the 1885 state census
-Edward age 22 married 17-year-old Luanna Masters June 8, 1884
-Anna age 24 married Prussian immigrant Frederick William Luedke January 14, 1891
-John age 24 married 20-year-old Elizabeth in 1893
-Sarah age 19 married 21-year-old Irish-American Thomas Ford November 22, 1895
-Richard age 26 married 24-year-old Katherine Rose Ford May 18, 1898 (Thomas Ford's cousin)

Richard took over the 160 acre homestead parcel in Section 34, and Thomas retired from farming. Thomas and Ellen went to live in town next to son Edward- who built the Pacific Hotel in Garvin in 1898 on the corner of Grant and First Streets, a block from the train depot (perhaps built on Thomas Edwards' homestead lot there). Thomas applied for another increase in his disability pension for dizzy spells and severe daily headaches worsened in extremes of hot or cold temperature. A repeat examination found him 5 feet 6 inches tall, down to 130 pounds, with a tender, scarred 2 inch groove on the top of his head. He was exceedingly nervous, underweight from poor nuitrition, and had valvular heart disease causing difficulty with minimal exertion. Despite his poor condition, his pension was not increased.

A physical exam in January 1904 showed that Thomas looked much older than he should for his age with senility, emaciation, a tottering gait, rapid feeble pulse, and inability to do more than slight exertion. Thomas Edwards died at home from his heart disease one month later. He was buried at Bethel Cemetery at Garvin. His tombstone reads:
Thomas Edwards
Died Feb. 27, 1904
Aged 74 years
Gone but not forgotten

The Tracy, MN newspaper "Tracy Republican Trumpet" ran Thomas Edward's obituary March 12, 1904:
"Feb'y 27 1904 Thos. Edwards of Garvin departed this life in his 76th year. Mr. Edwards was born in North Wales at a place called Llanwich y llyn near Bala. He emmigrated to this country when he was 22 years and located in the state of New York. United in marriage with Miss Ellen Williams in 1859 of the same state, who is left to mourn his loss. Removed to Wisconsin just before the war and enlisted as a private in the 6th Reg. He was wounded by a rifle ball near Petersburg, Va. and soon after the war moved to Butternut Valley, Minn. and located on a farm.
In that ever remembered storm of January 1873 he was caught in the blizzard while coming home from the timber with a load of wood. He unhitched his horses and left them to the mercy of the elements and struck out alone believing he would find some place of refuge, and as luck had it came to a house and stayed there all that night and nearly all the next day. He had left three small children at home alone and guided by a fence he at last reached home to find the children safe. In 1875 he moved to Lyon County and located on a farm in the town of Sodus. He retired from the farm some five years ago and located in Garvin. He was well known as a citizen and as a kind and honest neighbor. His bible and a Welsh hymnal were his favorite books. The funeral services were held at the house and the church March 1, and his remains were interred in the Custer cemetery. Rev. Geo. J. Battery officiating. He leaves his wife, three daughters and three sons to mourn his loss.
The family and relatives have the sympathy of the community."

In Marcy, NY, this obituary ran for Thomas:
"Thomas Edwards, Marietta, Minn. Bu farw y Cymro adbabyddus uchod Chwefror 27. Ganwyd ef yn Llanuwchllyn, ond ymfudodd i America 51 mlynedd yn ol. Yr oedd yn frawd i'rdiweddar, John E. Edwards, New Jersey, ac yn frawd yn nghyfraith i John Williams, Holland Patent, N.Y. Arferai y teuluoll fyw yn Marcy, ger capel Bethania, yr hwn a adeiladwyd gan Thomas Edwards, tua 45 mylnedd yn ol, pan mewn partneriaeth a John X. Davies. Ymadawodd o Marcy am Wisconsin tua 40 mlynedd yn ol. Ymrestrodd i'r fyddin ac ar derfyn y gwrthryfel gwnaeth ei gartref yn Minnesota. Gadawodd ar ei ol chwaer, Mrs. Jane L. Lewis, Lake Crystal, Minn."
Translated to English, this states: "Thomas Edwards, Marietta (apparently Amiret township), Minn. Be dead the Welchman well-known above February 27. From he is Llanuwchllyn but emigrated he America 51 years ago. He be brother to the late John E. Edwards, New Jersey, and brother-in-law (indirect) to John Williams, Holland Patent, N.Y. As accustomed to doing the family (all) living in Marcy, at Chapel of Bethania , this built by Thomas Edwards about 45 years ago when in partner with John X. Davies. Departed from Marcy for Wisconsin about 40 years ago. Enlisted he in the army and at the end of the rebellion made his home at Minnesota. Leaves he a sister Mrs. Jane L. Lewis, Lake Crystal, Minn."

Thomas did not leave a will, and it took nine years for his probate to make its way through the courts. The 80 acre farm parcel in Section 33 was valued at $902 minus a $300 mortgage, the 10 acre farm parcel in Section 2 was valued at $96, and the city lot in Garvin was valued at $350. Ultimately in June 1913, the probate court for Lyon County stated that widow Ellen should receive the homestead lot in Garvin for herself plus 1/3 of each of his two parcels of land. The 6 children (or in his recently deceased son John's case, the child's heirs) were to equally divide the remainder.

Ellen applied for a Civil War widow's pension one month after Thomas' death, and was granted $8 per month a year later. In September 1916 the US Congress increased pensions for Civil War widows over the age of 70, and Ellen applied for and received an increase to $20 per month. Ellen died shortly after that on June 7, 1917. Her obituary appeared in the June 14, 1917 Milroy, Minnesota newspaper:
"Thursday at 1 AM at the age of 82, R.F. Edwards' mother, Mrs. Ellen Edwards of Garvin passed into the great beyond. She has been a woman who carried her age extremely well, looking like a woman of 50 or 60 when we last saw her here about six months ago. Since that time she has been failing and has been confined to bed for several weeks. The cause of her death was old age hurried on by heart trouble. She was born in North Wales and came to this country when 21 and resided in Lyon Co. since 1875. Her husband died in 1904. She leaves two sons, R.F. Edwards of this place and Ed of Garvin. Three daughters, Mrs. Willford of Moosejaw, Can., Mrs. Lidtke of Garvin and Mrs. Ford of Yankton, S.D. All were with her at the time of her death. Funeral was held at Garvin Saturday afternoon. The daughters are now at the home of their brother R.F. Edwards."

Ellen was buried next to her husband Thomas at Bethel Cemetery in Garvin. Her son John had been buried there by then as well, having died in 1907 at age 38 after being thrown from a horse. Her children Edward and Anna were later buried at Bethel Cemetery when they died in 1938 and 1954. Ellen's tombstone reads:
Mother
Ellen Edwards
Born May 22, 1836
Died June 7, 1916
Ellen Edwards had been careful to make out a will before her death, and left 1/2 of her estate to her son Edward Edwards, and 1/2 of her estate to her daughter Anna Luedke.
