My maiden name is Forbes and I have decided to take on the task of researching our family heritage. My father's side goes back to Ireland and Scotland. My mother's side goes back to Germany and Russia. The surnames on my father's side that I will begin my research with are Forbes and Castles. The surnames on my mother's side that I will be researching are Stahr and Kneise.
Where we all Began (as much as I know anyway). It all began when David Forbes and Nora Castles were married in Ireland. They then had 3 children; Kathleen, Gordon, and Norah. They moved to Canada in 1948 and continued their life here. (See Photo of their 1927 wedding) On the other side of things was Dave Stahr who was born in Saratov, Russia and emmigrated to Canada, through Germany, with his family. Dave Stahr and Lillian Kneise were married in Calgary, Alberta and had 3 children; Harvey, Viola, and Don. (See the photo of the Stahr family circa 1941)
Well! What came Next? In 1954 Gordon Forbes and Viola Stahr met and were married in Winnipeg, Manitoba. (See photo of their wedding) They then had 4 children; Janice, David, Paul and Phil. They moved around and lived in several different provinces in Canada because Gordon was a Baptist Pastor. (See family photo taken in British Columbia in 1965)
Is there More? Yes there is more; way more; the history behind these families is far more interesting, I'm sure. I've been told that my Father side, the Forbes, go all the way back to a Lord Forbes of Scotland. This Lord Forbes was said to have married the daughter, or granddaughter of Robert the Bruce. I've just begun this family research but I know that much more will surface as I get further into it but for now this is a place to start.
Alex Forbes (father of David Forbes) (70 KB) I've been told this is the father of my grandfather David Forbes (my great grandfather). His name is Alex but I do not have a birthdate; this photo must have been taken in Ireland in the late 1800's or early 1900's.
