Notes for Hugh Lewis Venable:
The following excerpt comes from "Genealogies of Virginia Families, Volume 1"
In the Albemarle County records, Deed Book 3, page 80, March 14, 1761 - William Banks & Elizabeth his wife sell to Turner Richardson 666 acres lying in Albemarle County and Goochland also (Goochland, Deed Book 8, page 156). William Banks seems to be the same as the William Banks of Hanover County, who on May 15, 1739 (Goochland records, Deed Book 3, page 309) bought from Abraham Venable, of Hanover, 200 acres lying on Byrd Creek, part of 1300 acres patented by said Venable on June 20, 1733, and lying on the branches of Byrd Creek, beginning on John Martin's line.
The following comes from Marriages of Virginia Residents, Volume II, Part IV, page 131.
Hugh Lewis Venable married 14, June 1757, Mary Martin, both in this Parish. Douglas Register, page 3. She, daughter of William Martin of Albemarle County.
More About Hugh Lewis Venable:

iii. | Martha Venable, born May 27, 1760 in Virginia; died Unknown; married Ralph Banks December 09, 1778 in Fluvanna County, Virginia; born June 1759 in Virginia; died Unknown. |
Notes for Ralph Banks: The following comes from Virginia Genealogies # 3, 1600s-1800s, Wm. Banks of King and Queen Co., and Adam Blanks of Stafford Co. The William Banks who married September 15, 1753, Elizabeth Martin (Douglas Register) and lived on land that lay partly in Albemarle County and partly in Goochland County, probably belongs to the King & Queen County family. The Douglas Register records the birth of four of the children of William and Elizabeth (Martin) Banks: (1) Wm. b. Dec. 6, 1755; (2) Betty b. Mar. 8, 1758; (3) Ralph b. June, 1759; and (4) Mildred b. Jan. 4, 1762. In Albemarle Records, Deed Book 3, page 80, March 14, 1761, William Banks and Elizabeth his wife sell to Turner Richardson 666 acres lying in Albemarle and Goochland Counties. To comply fully with the law, they recorded the deed in Goochland also (Goochland Deed Book 8, page 156. William Banks seems to be the same as the William Banks, of Hanover County, who on May 15, 1739 (Goochland records, Deed Book 3, page 309) bought from Abraham Venable, of Hanover County, 200 acres lying on Byrd Creek, part of 1300 acres patented by said Venable on June 20, 1733, and lying on the branches of Byrd Creek, beginning on John Martin's line. The appraisal of William Banks's estate is in Albemarle records, Will Book 2, page 148, July 14, 1763. In 1769, an account of the estate was returned by Jarrett Wilkinson and Elizabeth his wife, who was probably the widow of William Banks. Roger Thompson, William Payne & George Thompson settled the estate (Will Book 2, page 249). The names of Roger and George Thompson, certainly Hanover County people, would confirm supposition that William Banks was of that county also, tho he probably belonged to the King and Queen family as has been mentioned. Of the four children recorded in the Douglas Register, we have the following notes. Mildred, b. 1762, almost certainly the Mildred Banks whose marriage bond, dated January 13, 1785, to Wm. Gaines is in Fluvanna County records. Also in Fluvanna is the bond of Ralph Banks, her brother, dated December 9, 1778, to Martha Venable, daughter of Hugh Lewis Venable and Mary Martin as occurring May 27, 1760. The Register also records the birth of Wm., son of Ralph & Martha Banks on September 24, 1781. The following three marriages from Fluvanna County are likely those of other children of Ralph & Martha Banks; Ralph Banks and Catherine S. Rice, m. December 26, 1808; Jane Banks and Reuben Norris,m. January 7, 1814; Frances Banks and Benjamin Hackney, m. August 15, 1799. |
253 | iv. | Elizabeth (Eliza) Venable, born December 08, 1764 in Goochland County, Virginia; died 1830 in Fluvanna County, Virginia; married Richard Bragg December 19, 1785 in Fluvanna County, Virginia. | ||
v. | Judith (Juda) Venable, born Abt. 1765 in Prince Edward County, Virginia; died Bef. 1818 in Planters Hall, Breckenridge County, Kentucky; married William Moorman, Sr. October 04, 1789 in Fluvanna County, Virginia; born 1751 in Louisa or Albemarle County, Virginia; died January 25, 1829 in Planters Hall, Breckenridge County, Kentucky. |
Notes for William Moorman, Sr.: The following comes from "William Moorman (1751-1829) Of Virginia And Kentucky", by Mrs. Isabel M. McDaniel............. There have been several articles written about the Moorman Family of Virginia over the years. (Such as Our Kin, by Ackerly and Parker, page 672; Lynchburg's Pioneer Quakers and Their Meeting House, by Douglas Summers Brown; William and Mary Quarterly, Volume 12, page 177; Campbell Chronicles and Family Sketches, by R. H. Early, page 460; Historical Southern Families, by John B. Boddie, page 20; James Clark-Mansfield-Christopher Clark and Allied Families, by Jennie E. McNaught, page 209; History of the Moorman Family, by Mrs. Thomas Moorman Eldridge) All of these contain some errors. But the greatest error and injustice has been done to William Moorman (1751-1829) and his children. It is this William Moorman's records that I wish to have corrected. William Moorman was born about 1751 in Louisa or Albemarle County, Virginia, the son of Achilles Moorman (1713-1785) and Elizabeth Adams (daughter of Robert Adams (1680-1740) and Mourning Lewis (1692-1765). He died 25 January 1829, age 78 years, in Kentucky at a place called Planters Hall, about 8 miles south of Hardinsburg, the county seat of Breckinridge County. His will named all his children except Charles who had died before the making of the will. William Moorman married three times. He had children by his first two wives but none by the third. William married first Jane (Jeane) Haden (Hayden) and had six children. After her death, William married 21 August 1789, Judith (Juda) Venable, (daughter of Hugh Lewis Venable and Mary Martin). They lived in Campbell County, Virginia. William and Judith had six children. All of William's children were born in Virginia except possibly the last two. One record says that William moved to Kentucky in 1804 and his brother, Jesse, moved there in 1812. Another record says that William moved to Kentucky about 1808. So it is possible the last two children were born in Kentucky. William Moorman married a third time, 5 July 1818, Mrs. Elizabeth Harwood Miller, (in Kentucky). (Court House at Hardinsburg burned and early marriage records done, but the Filson Library in Louisville, Kentucky has a few of the early ones). Some records say that Elizabeth was a Haden, others say a Howard. William Moorman owned many acres in Breckinridge County, Kentucky and lived the life of a well-to-do planter. His home was on a hill and one can see miles around the beautiful rolling hills. The old William Moorman grave yard is on this hill and it is full of Moormans and related kin. Here William is buried but there is no marker above his grave to show where his remains lie. The place passed to his son Jesse who was called "Hill Jesse", to distinguish him from other kind of the same name. Now the place is called the Phillips' place. I am sending about twenty pages of Information to verify the facts given in this article have been given to The National Genealogical Society. Also for more proof see: Historical Sketches of the Campbell, Pilcher, and Kindred Families, by Margaret Campbell Pilcher, page 321; Will of Achilles Moorman, Will BookI, 1782-1800, Campbell County, Virginia; Will of William Moorman, Will Book No.1, pages 56-57, Hardinsburg, Breckinridge County, Kentucky, dated 23 March 1827, probated 16 February 1829; "A Short Sketch of One Branch of the Moorman Family of America," by Clifford Moorman, (not published but on file in the N.G.S. Library); record from the late Dr. Thomas McAdory Owen's files in the Archives in Montgomery, Alabama, (on file in N.G.S. Library). His Will named all of his children except Charles who had died before the making of the Will. |
