My paternal great-great-great-great-grandfather William Laughlin, Sr. was born in late 1750's in Cumberland Co., PA and married. They had nine children.
Baalis 1809 1870-1880
My paternal great-great-great-grandfather Baalis Laughlin was born in Missouri and married a French woman (between 1850-1851?) by the name of Salina Agee (through her we Laughlin’s are distantly related to James Agee, author of ‘African Queen’).
James L. October, 1852
William 1840
John W. 1846
Mary Elizabeth 1838
Hiram Thomas 1854
Silas 1837
Nancy M. 1850
Benjamin 1843
Sarah 1848
Benjamin Laughlin was found in the 1860 census records in Benton Township, Osage County, Missouri (M653, page 184). He was 65 years old and born in South Carolina. His occupation was farmer and listed alone in the census although listed as married. Silas Laughlin was also listed on page 181 and his occupation was day laborer. Listed as married but listed alone at 24 years old. John (M.) Laughlin, 61 years old and born in S. Carolina was listed with his wife Magdalen who was born in Virginia. Their children’s names were Benton, Amos, Rebecca, William, Ivy, Harriet, and Virginia. This is most likely Benjamin’s and Silas’ brother. William Laughlin, son of Baalis was a commisioner for and helped to create Franklin County in Missouri. He helped to decide where the new courthouse would be built and received $142 for his pay. William Laughlin was also a member and foreman of the grand jury in Gasconade County along with his son Benjamin Laughlin. They served on the first jury trial of the grand jury for Gasconade County.
A James Laughlin (36 years old), and a Meary Laughlin (60 years old) were also listed in the 1860 census living not too far from Baalis and his family. They may have been cousins.
