Victoria Ema DAVIS, wife of George William FARVER; daughter of Mary "Polly" LONG & Reuben H. DAVIS of Benton area, Columbia County, PA. - Glen Ezra & Lois Lucille (FARVER) LAUBACH (164 KB)
Parents of Polly A. LAUBACH-ECKROTE: Glen Ezra & Lois Lucille (FARVER) LAUBACH, Columbia County, Pennsylvania, circa 1948. Glen is named after his two grandfathers, Glen W. LAUBACH and Ezra O. HESS. He is the son of Daniel Monroe and Marea Theodotia (HESS) LAUBACH. Lois is the daughter of Arle Robert "Bob" and Alverna "Verna" Hulda (DAVIS) FARVER, all of Columbia County, PA. - 1929 Tornado hits HESS farm (96 KB)
In 1929, a tornado swept across northeastern Columbia County, PA, destroying property in Greenwood, Fishing Creek, Sugarloaf, and Jackson Townships. This photo proof from the Benton Argus newspaper shows the remains of the barn of Ezra O. HESS in Waller, Jackson Township, Columbia Co., PA. His daughter, Marcella, heard the loud noise and looked out of the upstairs bedroom window. By then, the tornado had demolished the barn, killing their horse and destroying farm equipment. It had also ripped out many fruit trees across the area. Later, HESS discovered his hen safe among the barn's rubble, still sitting on her unbroken eggs. Surveying the damage are Glen W. [wearing cap, in middle of photo]& Jennie (WARNER) LAUBACH, in-laws of Ezra HESS's daughter, Marea (HESS) LAUBACH. The other man to the right appears to be Lee WARNER, probably Jennie's brother. - St. Gabriel's Get-Together in 1998 (90 KB)
Many descendants of the pioneers of the Benton, PA, area of Columbia County got together at the beautiful St. Gabriel's Episcopal Church in Cole's Creek, Pennsylvania, in 1998. Multi-congregational worshippers met here beginning in the late 1700's, even before the first log church was built circa 1812. The inside of this small, lovely church is all chestnut wood. Today, the land is located in Columbia County, PA, along Route 42 between the Bloomsburg and Buckhorn areas. Johann George LAUBACH died before the patent was granted to his son and executor, Adam LAUBACH, in 1802. This appears to be the same land that George's other son, Johann "Christian" & Anna Maria (FRUTCHEY) LAUBACH were already living on in the late 1700's, and where Anna Maria's grandfather, John GODHARD, died in 1797.
