"Death of Jas. O. MacDonald. Again were called upon to record the doings of the death angels. It is with deep sorrow that we announce the death of another of one of our citizens. Jas. O. MacDonald was born in Maine, September 28, 1872, and died at Guthrie Center, Iowa, July 21, 1912, aged 38 years, 10 months and 21 days. He was married to Myrtle Allender in 1896. To this union was born eight children, two of whom preceeded him to the tomb, the other to mourn his going away. He also leaves two brothers, George MacDonald of Illinois, and Clifford MacDonald of Wisconsin. Deceased was a long time member of the Baptist church, and was a consistent Christian, doing his duty with both willingness and pleasure. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at the Baptist church services being conducted by the pastor, Rev. H. T. LeGrande, after which the remains were laid to rest in the city cemetery. The sorrowing wife and children have the sympathy of all in their bereavement."

The Iowa USGen Web Project shares old WPA cemetery records with this disclaimer: "During the 1930s, a program was instituted to survey the cemeteries. This was done by the WPA. Various sources were used. Accuracy leaves something to be desired! However, for some of our ancestors this is the only record of their death. I present this material to you with some reservations. Check for accuracy, where you can." They show this record: "MACDONALD James O. B-28 Sep 1872 21, D-Jul 21, 1912, Age: 38, Buried Valley Cemetery, Guthrian (Guthrie Center) 25 Jul 1912. h/o Martle" Showing the age of death as "38" which is the same as the obituary above, showing a difference of 2 years in other records of birth as Sep 29, 1874.
