      15. Jane Girard, born Mar 20, 1848 in Erie County, New York; died Apr 27, 1923 in Savanah, Carroll County, Illinois. She was the daughter of 30. Samuel Girard and 31. Esther Mae Davis.

The following is from the Family Tree, Civil War Records, CD 3, Generations, that I found July 7, 2001: Company: E, Unit: 6 Wisconsin Infantry. Rank In: Private Rank Out: Hospital Steward, National Archives Microfilm Box, Roll, and Record: 000559, 0001, 00001224, Fought for: (U = Union, C = Confederate) U. He was 59 when he died. He was a Lumberman and a Boatman.

From his obituary forwarded to me Oct 17, 1999, by Pam Prine: "His funeral was attended by a large concourse of people, among the many old soldiers, the deceased being a Veteran of the War. He enlisted May 15, 1861. An old time resident of this county, he died at his home in the town of Mattison, Waupaca County, on Saturday, of consumption, with which he had been afflicted for many years. He was about 60 years old and leaves a wife and family of 8 children. His funeral took place Sunday at Embarrass, attended by a large concourse of people, among them many old soldiers, the deceased being a Veteran of the War."

From an obituary provided by Paula J. Vaughan, the Shawano County Newspaper, Shawano, Wisconsin: "Joseph Allender of the town of Matteson, Waupaca County, formerly a resident of the town of Belle Plain, died last Saturday, July 2nd of consumption at the age of sixty years. The deceased was born in the state of Ohio 1832. When twenty years of age he came to this state and settled in Belle Plain. In 1861 he enlisted as a volunteer in the Regimnet, Wisconsin Infantry and served all through the war. He was a member of the famous Iron Brigade. The deceased leaves a wife and eight children. The funeral took place at Embarrass last Sunday.

THE BOOK: "Timer and Tales" by the Navarino History Committee - This book has a biography about Joseph's parents and siblings. A copy of several pages of this out-of-print book was sent to me by Paula Vaughan. The stories are priceless and are stored safely in my files.

This family is listed in the 1870 Federal Census, Waukechon (Post Office in Shawano) Wisconsin. Joseph is listed as a Boatman, 38years old, born in Ohio. It lists Jane as age 21, keeping house; and their son Frank, 2 months old. In this same Census are listed his parents. William age 63, Farmer, born in Maryland. Sarah age 56, keeping house, born in Ohio. Also listed is his brother John age 29, his sister Susan age 17, and his brother Thomas age 40, a farmer born in Ohio. Thomas' family is also listed with his wife Oselia and their seven children.

  Notes for Jane Girard:
Jane Girard Allender died at her home at Savanna, Illinois, and her remains were brought back to Embarrass for burial. The funeral took place Monday morning from the Congregational Church and the services were conducted by Rev. George Bradfield. Interment took place in Riverside Cemetery at Embarrass. She died at the age 78 years, one month and seven days. She came west with her parents while a small girl and the family settled in Wisconsin. At the close of the Civil War, she was united in marriage to James Allender, a veteran of the conflict, who died years years ago. She was the mother of ten children. Obituary info from Jim MacDonald reads: "Buried in Embarrass. Mrs. Jane Allender who passed away6 at Sevana, Ill., on April 27 was brought to Embarrass last SMonday where funeral services and burial took place. She had been ill for several weeks. Mrs. Allender was born in the State of New York, March 20, 1847. Her parents were Mr. & Mrs. Samuel Girard and she came with them to Wisconsin. She was married to Joseph Allender in Sept., 1865, in Shawano County. Mr. Allender died July 2, 1892. For some time Mrs. Allender made her home at Embarrass and later lived for a time with her daughter at Fond du Lac. Since the death of her husband she has made her home with the children and for the past three years has resided with her daughter, Mrs. Brand, in Savanna. She was a kind and conscientious woman and a loving mother, and her passing will leave a void in the hearts of her children. She is survived by 29 grandchildren.

May 1923, Myrtle (Allender-MacDonald) Brand requested reimbursement for death expenses for her mother Jane Girard Allender. Date of death stated by Myrtle Brand and attending physician L. H. Maloney was Apr 27, 1923. Place of death was 205 Diagonal St., Savanna, Carroll, Illinois. Place of burial was Embarrass, Wisconsin.

Note: Jane Girard is a sister to Esther Louise, who is believed to be part Native American.

"Funeral services for Bert Allender, 70 of 2105 Doty Street, who passed away at Mercy hospital Friday afternoon, will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Masonite temple with Masonic rites and the Rev. Edwin Becker of Emmanuel Evangelica and Reformed church conducting a short prayer service. . . He was one of seven children of the late Jane and Joseph Allender, pioneer homesteaders in Shawano County. He lived in Oshkosh, Wisconsin for 40 years. The deceased was one of the few men remaining who guided the huge lumer rafts down the Wolf and Red Rivers from Morgan's siding to Oshkosh for the then - important lumber industries of Winneconne and Oshkosh. Mr. Allender started work for the Chicago & Northwestern railroad at Neenah-Menasha in 1900 and retired after 40 years serving, August 17, 1940...and had a 40-year membership in the Railroad Trainmen brotherhood. He was a life member of Centennial Lodge No. 205 of the Masons." (Oshkosh Northwestern - March 20, 1945, Page 4)
