TOWN OF WAUKECHON
In the very old records of Shawano County, the name "Town of Waukechon" appears as early as April 6, 1858, at which time it was ordered and determined by the then existing County Board of Supervisors that the lands comprising this township be set off in a town by itself.

Among the early settlers are found such names as John Kugel, Henry and George Nemitz, Archie, James and Parian Semple, W. D. Peterson, William Allender, D. Webster, Henry Caughill, Wencel Urban, Sr., Wencel Tomashek, Peter Herbeck, Jacob Pleshk, Matt Vomastic, George Pettingill and William C. Mackay.

At the first town meeting held at the home of James Semple, the following officers were elected: James Semple, Chairman; W. D. Peterson and William Allender, Supervisors; Parlan Semple, Clerk.

1855 State Census: This index is for all of Shawano County and these are among the very first "settlers", with the county being only 2 years old and the state being only 7 years old at the time, too. The 1855 Wisconsin territorial census recorded only the heads of household. Included in this list is William Allender.

From: HALF-CENTURY CLUB
Shawano Advocate Newspaper, April 6, 1906
Letter Read by M. Wescott at the Club Meeting at O. Andrews http://www.rootsweb.com/~wishawan/miscnewspaper.html
"William Allender, kept a stopping place at the crossing of the Embarrass River. In the fall of 1854 the little colony experienced a hard time, cold weather set in early in the fall and the barges laden with the winter supplies were frozen in between Shiocton and the Red Banks and it was near Christmas before the teams could be got to them. During this time, flour and salt meats were a scarce article but as there was a fairly good crop of wild rice gathered by the Indians, which, with the fish and wild game, supplied from the lake and forest, the settlement was tided over until the barge supplies were brought up by teams.

"I cannot close without paying a brief tribute of appreciation and respect to the hardy and noble pioneers who were so instrumental in blazing the way, whose latch string was always on the outside and the new comer was always received and welcomed. Little did they know that they were opening the way for the thousands who have since followed after them and have established happy and prosperous homes within the bounds of our county."

Children of William Allender and Sarah Lashley are:

Found in the Wisconsin Local History and Biography Articles, http://www.wisconsinhistory.org/wlhba/articlesearch.asp (enter: Allender); is a great article with headlines that says: "DANIEL ALLENDER WAS BORN APRIL 14, 1838 , Relinquishes Claim to Having Been First White Boy Born on Mailwaukee Site." I have this article in my files, but here is a few quotes:

"Sheldon Bradt, Northport, in a letter to The Sentinel says that the Allender family Bible has been found, and that the date of Mr. Allender's birth as set forth in the Bible is April 14, 1838. Charles Milwaukee Sivyer was born on May 4, 1836.

"Mr. Bradt's letter says that it has learned that Mr. Allender is descended from Irish-Scotch, English and Pensylvania Dutch stock, and that there is a drop of SIndian blood in his veins.

      30. Samuel Girard, born Oct 27, 1816 in Rome, Oneida Cty., New York; died Jun 04, 1889 in Waupaca Cty., Embarras, Wisconsin. He was the son of 60. Samuel Girard and 61. Margaret Perry. He married 31. Esther Mae Davis Mar 02, 1835 in Charlestown, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.

      31. Esther Mae Davis, born Sep 1818 in Charlestown, Suffolk County, Massachusetts; died Mar 29, 1902 in Matteson, Waupaca County, Wisconsin. She was the daughter of 62. Peter Davis.

Notes for Samuel Girard:
Information from a very old "paper" that was given to my sister, Jean (Cross) Morales by our mother, Violet MacDonald Cross. It is a large frameable and very beautifully crafted "Condensed Family History". It is handwritten with the following statement: "Samuel Girard, the father of the above named children, was born of parents of French descent, in Rome, New York in 1816, At the age of 19 he was married to Esther Davis of Charlestown, Massachuetts, who was then 15 years of age. The marriage took place in Charlestown, March 2nd, 1835. After residing there for a few years they moved to the Falls of Niagara where they were employed as interpreters by ... of the hotel managers. They next moved to the vicinity of Buffalo where Mr. Girard was employed as a foreman in the construction of the Erie Canal. In 1847 they moved to Wisconsin where they have since lived. Mr. Girard served in the Civil War, was badly wounded on account of which he now draws a pension." (I have a copy of this document in my files)

Received from Paula Vaughan, from the "Soldiers' and Citizens' Album of Biographical Records - Containing Personal Skeetches of Army Men and Citizens Prominent In Loyalty To The Union. Also A Chronological and Statistical History of the Civil War and A History of the Grand Army of the Republic with Portraits of Soldeirs and Pominents Citizens" Chicago, Illinois Grand Army Publishing Company 1888: "Mr. Girard...was residing in Oshkosh, Wisconsin when he determined to enlist, which he did at Oshkosh, May 4, 1864 in Company E, 38th Wisconsin Infantry for three years. The enlistment and organization of the regiment was irregular from the cessation of bounties about the time four companies were mustered in and ordered to the field and Company E joined the battalion in front of Petersburg where active operations were going on. Mr. Girard went into service immediately and four days after his arrival the mine was exploded, and the regiment scarcely 100 strong, consisting of Company B and E, left the charge after the explosion, holding the pit until four o'clock in the afternoon. On the second day of the command retired to the second line and resumed their former position of the following day. Mr. Girard was in constant activity there until August 19th when he accompanied the regiment to the assault of the Weldon Railroad. On the 20th he was wounded and went to Lincoln Hospital at Washington, whence he was transferred to Philadelphia and there remained in hospital until his discharged June 2, 1865. He returned to his home at Embarrass, whither he had removed from Oshkosh in 1857 and has never recovered from the effects of his injury. He was engaged in llumbering at the date of his enlistment and since leaving military life has not performed any labor. He has been a resident of Clintonville, since 1883."

The 1880 U.S. Census says that Samuel Girard was born 1816 in New York and was 64 years old at the time of the Census. It indicates he was a farmer at that time. His father's birthplace was "on shipboard", his mother's birthplace was Canada. Esther Mae (Davis) Girard was born 1889 in MA, age 61 at time of Census. Father & Mother's birthplace was Massachusetts, and shows that they were married in Charlestown, Middlesex, Massachusetts.

Children of Samuel Girard and Esther Davis are:
  i.   Esther Louise Girard, born Dec 23, 1835 in Canada, or Massachusetts, or New York; died Jan 19, 1914 in Matteson Township, Waupaca County, Wisconsin; married Daniel W. Morris 1852; born 1819; died Nov 20, 1897.
  Notes for Esther Louise Girard:
An e-mail from Carl (?) writes: "Esther Louise was the eldest child. She did not die in childbirth - as is indicated, and seems to have possibly been a half sister - listed in one census as "servant." There are indicators that Esther Louise was part Native American. I do remember being somewhat non-plussed to find her birthdate pre-dated the marriage between Sam and Esther Davis. Esther Louise married Daniel Morris in Wisconsin during the 1840's, probably soon after the Girards relocated to Wisconsin."

  Notes for Daniel W. Morris:
From an e-mail by Carl (?): "Dan Morris, who'd lived with the Menominie Indians in Wisconsin for over a dcade before the arrival of the Girards, made shingles, after he and Esther Louise were married, loading the shingles on a 60 foot dugout canoe (30,000 shingles at a time, six oarsman) and transporting them by water to New London. This dugout was still visible on the shores of Lake Winibago in the 1930's. Daniel was my g-g-grandfather and Sam Girard was my g-g-g grandfather."

  Notes for Mary Girard:
From Paula Vaughan: "1- Got her death date from her headstone in Riverside Cem., Embarrass, Wisconsin, although Mary was married twice her headstone bears the name of GIRARD.
"2- She is listed as a child of Samuel and Ester in the article about her father in the Soldiers and Citizens Biographies 1888 and the Civil War Veterans of Winnebago Co., Wisconsin Vol. 1 A-H
