John D. Lavendoski's Burgenland & Polish Genealogy Website

Updated November 16, 2004

I have been doing extensive research into the History and Genealogy of Burgenland, Austria and also the land of Mazovia in Poland.

My mother's ancestors emigrated to the U.S. from southern Burgenland (located on Austrian border with Hungary).

Some of the key family names on my mother's side include JURASITS, MILISITS, and TIMAR. I have been able to trace some of these lineages back to about 1700 thus far, and I have made six trips to Austria, where I discovered church records which go back to 1681. For more information, please also see my alternate website at: www.szentpeterfa.com

Most of my father's ancestors hailed from the area around the city of Plock, in north-central Poland. This area was in the heart of ancient Polish Dukedom of Mazovia.

One pleasant surprise (in terms of simplifying genealogical research) has been my great-grandmother's line. Her family was descended from a number of quite ancient knightly families of the old Polish Commonwealth and a huge amount of information was therefore available from both Roman Catholic Church records and from Polish Armorials (books concerned with the history and origins of the Polish nobility).

Key names include TREMBINSKI, WLOCZEWSKI, von BIBERSTEIN, and CHELMICKI. I have been able to pinpoint direct line ancestors as far removed as the mid 1600s and family origins back to the late 11th century. I have made three trips to Poland and I am considering another visit in 2005.

In general, I have been quite lucky, as my ancestors tended to stay within a geographic area of only a few square miles for 400-500 years prior to their US immigration.

I am willing to share any information which I find and I am also looking for other interested parties with which to correspond, on these topics.
