Ezekiel CLOUD, b. 14 March 1762 in Wilkes county, NC.Ezekiel CLOUD migrated to GA with "Elizabeth Jones HARMON(b.1783,NC), her parents (Hezekiah HARMON and Elizabeth JONES,dates unknown) ,her father being a friend of Ezekiel Cloud's, and her Uncle(no name given). (Later when her Mother died?) The Uncle returned to NC or SC to settle up the estate and was never heard from again, supposedly killed by Indians. When Mr Harmon died(no date given), Elizabeth was the ward of Ezekiel Cloud. There were no schools, rather colleges, at that time in GA to send Elizabeth.Mr. Cloud did not know what to do with her so he married her." This is a documented story.Ezekiel was 46 and Elizabeth was 14.He did the honorable thing for his time. I have found a Jeremiah CLOUD(b.1720?- d. ?) in the NC area where Ezekiel Cloud was born(one source calls it"Yadkin River, NC" ,another, "Yadkin co,NC").Two different Cloud lines have a Jeremiah CLOUD's death as 1850 in either "Wilkes co,GA or Wilkes co,NC".Several CLOUD lines have a Jeremiah CLOUD Date of Death as 1850, but that would make THIS Jeremiah 130 yrs old.Perhaps the date belongs to the son of Jeremiah also named Jeremiah(Jr) or HIS son, Jeremiah(the 3rd)!
I cannot find any documentation of the family in NC (names, siblings, relatives, dates, marriages, etc). Other than one indirect lead from Agnes Wells book"Joseph Winston,His Entry Book,Surry County,NC,Land Entries,1778-81".Land grant #1329 dated 27Jan 1779.
My CLOUD line descends from Ezekiel's son, Aaron Cloud(1810-1880,Henry co,GA-FL),his son,Willian Jackson Cloud(1835-1896,Henry-Fulton co,GA) to Andrew Jackson Cloud(Grandpa)(1867-1947,Fulton co,GA) to Faye Cloud Holt(Mom)(1904-1995,Fulton co,GA) to me.
Any information or leads on ancestors or descendants would be grateful. And a BIG thank you to all who have already assisted me on this quest!
On the Paternal side, it's a little more complicated.
The HOLT family originally was from TX."They had a large estate in Kilgore,(Gregg co(?),TX) where other members of the Holt family lived.Davis Abdon HOLT(b.29 Aug 1867,d.1916) and Irene LINDSEY(b.17 Dec 1869) of Irwinton, Wilkinson County,GA m.1892 and they moved to Texas and lived there several years. They had four children: Josephine b.?; son(?), Irby, b.?, son, Robert Lans(c)e, b. 25 July 1895 and son,Cosby, b. 24 September 1897. (Daughter) Josephine died and Irene became ill so the family moved back to Irwinton,GA in 1902(when my Dad,Cosby HOLT, was five years old)to be near her Father(John William LINDSEY b.1 Aug 1843,d. 26 Aug 1922,called "PapaJohn") and sisters: John(n)ie LINDSEY, Gertrude LINDSEY (CARSWELL) and Annie LINDSEY...her family and servants cared for her until her death(date unknown). She is buried on the LINDSEY lot, as is her husband(Davis Abdon HOLT), in Irwinton(GA)" Written documentation from my Mother(Faye Cloud HOLT).
Additional information: Davis Abdon HOLT was born in Rusk co,TX.
The parents of Irene, John William LINDSEY and Julia Francis TUCKER,(b. 19 Feb 1847 or 16 Mar 1847,d.15 Jan 1916) m.Jan 1869.
Julia Frances was the daughter of Robert TUCKER(b.28 Nov 1801,d.26 Oct 1884) and Mary Rutherford MATHIS(b.1807,d.23 Sept 1871) m. 1822.
Mary was the daughter of John Rutherford MATHIS(b.abt 1787,d.1861) and Priscilla DUPREE(b.6 Aug 1789, d. 9 April 1871) m.?.
John was the son of Thomas MATHIS(b.1756,d.1829) and Mary Rutherford MATHIS(b.1756, d.?) m.1778.That's not a mistake. Mother and Granddaughter had the same name, not uncommon back then.
Mary was the daughter of Colonel Robert RUTHERFORD(b. April 1734, Nottoway co,VA,d.23 Jan 1814 Newberry co,SC) and Dorothy Ann BROOKS(b.1735,d.1795)m.1752.
Colonel RUTHERFORD served in the Revolutionary War.During the Rev.War, he lived in Chatham co,NC.This is all documented in the NDAR registry.
I would like to fill in the dates and locations, etc. for the above individuals as well as expand the lines as much as possible.I will gladly share any information I have.
