R. THOMAS PITTMAN:
Thomas Pittman, Jr.. married to Elizabeth Lancaster , daugh ter of Robert and Sarah Lancaster , (Robert gave a depositi on to the court about that Thomas Pittman's will and name d his daughter and Pittman grandson in that deposition) an d as far as I can tell, she was mother to all the childre n he named in the will of 1730, which is on file in Richmon d (I have a copy)..The Pittmans were of Scandinavian origin ,and first went into Saxony, and there went into Britton an d settled in Momouthshire. One the Welsh border where they w ere living in the seventeenth century, and fought for thei r ill fated King. The coat of arms was granted to Sir Georg e Pittman, once governor general of India, and a deccendant o f the famous Captain John Pittman of Oliver Cromwell's army . When Charles was beheaded, three Pittman brothers joine d a Cavalier emigration to America and landed at James City ,Virginia. There in the course of time ,they seperated;one b rother going to the northern Colony, One remaining in Virgi nia, And one to the far south. (nothing is known of him o r his descendants) Info from Gene Pitman, 1100 Weste rn Ridge Dr., Waco, Texas 76712.

The origin of the New England Branch of th is family, no doubt is the same as the southern Branch es,S candinavian,is very ancient. They have kept a rapport with t heir kindred of whom Judge Thomas W. Pittman of New york Ci ty,who has made acquaintance with them, speaks as follows:"N ow as to the English Branch of the Pittmans, some some of t hem reside in this country; Mr.Kelson Pittman, connected wit h the Atlantic Cable, and Rev.H.Pittman,rector of an Episopa l church in New York. The mother,Mrs.E H Pittman resides a t Trinity,Newfoundland; The daughter, Miss Margaret,at Cambr idge, Massachusetts Another son of Mrs. E H Pittman, Thoma s Patrick Pittman,is a purser on one of the Hanana Steamer.
Mr. Banks Pittman,is one of the leading l awyers, solicitors of London with offices at 17-18 Basingha ll Street,London,E.C.,England. His daughter is the wife o f Secretary of Lord Curzon, late governor-General of India . Judge Thomas W Pittman says, "I have the Pittman coat o f Arms . It is elaborate and beautiful.Motto,"Virtue is tru e nobility". It was granted to Sir George Pittman, once Gov. - General of india, and a descendant of the famous Capt. Jo hn Pittman of Cromwell' army. While in England, I met many o f the relatives of the original Pittman family who settle d in Rhode Island. Hon. Thomas W Pittman (Judge) is a linea l descendant of that Branch of this Branch of the old Eng lish family which is found among the early settlers of rhod e Island.

I am told there are many errors in the work above

[ NOTE: At present, there are several people contributin g to the Pittman research (most notably Betsy & Billie Pitt man of Valdese North Carolina, Forrest King of Vienna VA, a nd myself, Beverly Williamson) who have a great many questi ons about the several Thomas Pitman's in the Surry / Isle o f Wight Counties, VA, records, and who now feel that Thoma s PITMAN d 1730 was most probably a grandson of Capt. Thoma s PITMAN, with another generation in between.... bcw ]

A case in point: In the preceeding Last Will & Testament o f Thomas PITMAN, there are three adult men named Thomas PIT MAN represented. There is Thomas the testator, Thomas th e executor, and Thomas the witness.
Thomas PITTMAN Jr. was at least 21 years old in Se p 1671 when he witnessed a deed. If this is the same Thoma s who died in 1730, as we have been supposing, he was at le ast 50 years old at the time of his marriage to Mary CHAMBE RS HOLLIMAN. Therefore, it is reasonable to suppose that s he was not his first wife, and that an unknown first wife m ust have been the mother of many of his children.

So, Thomas PITMAN Jr. "two youngest sons" were Sampson an d Joseph, according to Robert Lancaster , Jr. Therefore, t hey were sons of Elizabeth Lancaster PITMAN, and they wer e born after 1720 but before 1728.
From this document it would also appear that Thoma s PITMAN Jr.'s brother (the elusive William PITMAN) had liv ed on a piece of property owned by Thomas PITMAN Jr., whic h Thomas gave by his will to his son Samuel. But the langu age of Robert Lancaster 's deposition is not clear enough a bout the identity of this brother: whose brother was it - - Thomas's brother, or Samuel's brother? The wording is ve ry ambiguous.
It is possible that several more of Thomas PITMAN J r.'s children were born after Robert Lancaster 's will wa s written. In the years between 1720 and 1728 more than tw o children might have been born, so some of the others coul d belong to Elizabeth. Since none of the daughters were ma rried when Thomas's will was written in 1728, it is logica l to conclude that they may have been very young ... theref ore may have been daughters of his last wife. This would h ave to be concluded from a study of the childrens' ages, un less more documentation turns up.
Robert Lancaster 's "grandaughter Lettis PITTMAN" w as not named in her father's will, and was apparantly not i ncluded in the "six daughters" mentioned in Robert Lancaste r Jr.'s deposition. It can be inferred that she died betwe en 1720 and 1730.

Thomas Jr.us second wife, Mary CHAMBERS HOLLIMA N ( b ca 1675 d ca 1710 was the only daughter of William CH AMBERS (d ca 1679 Surry County, VA) whose wife, Margery (ma iden name unknown) JARRETT CHAMBERS, was still alive when h e wrote his will. Mary had a brother named William CHAMBERS , and half-siblings named Charles JARRETT and Elizabeth JAR RETT. Her mother's first husband had been Richard JARRET T who died in 1672 in Surry County, Virginia Mary CHAMBER S was married to William HALLIMAN while she was still unde r the guardianship of her brother William, so she was ver y young at the time of her first marriage. In 1704, Willia m HALLIMANus estate was settled in Surry County. Mary (Mar ie) was called "widow of William HALLIMANT in court on 2 J an 1704 Surry County, Virginia She had at least one son, Wi lliam HOLLYMAN. Thomas PITTMAN Jr. had intermarried with Ma ry widow of William HOLLEMAN by 1706. She was aged 35-43 a t that time -- clearly, she was not the mother of Thomas Jr .us many children. But she might have had one or two of th em... Which ones?
In Surry County Court, Nov 1706, Mary is describe d as "the relict and Adtrix. of William HALLIMAN who marrie d Thomas PITTMAN Jr.T It cannot be determined from presen tly available records whether or not Mary was the mother o f any of Thomas PITTMAN Jr.us children, though it appear s they were probably married for about five years.
In his book The Hollyman Family, A Genealogical an d Historical Record of the Descendants of Christopher Holly man of Isle of Wight County, Virginia, 1691, and Related Fa milies, Holleman, Holloman, Holliman, Holoman, Hollomon (wr itten about 1952), Mr. George A. Holleman attempts to ident ify the husband of Mary CHAMBERS. He says that she was mar ried to William HOLLYMAN (1661-1704), son of Christophe r d 1691, and that Mary was the mother of five children. H e gives her a son named Thomas T. HOLLYMAN born about 1675 , died about 1761, and says that Thomas was Williamus secon d son -- making William 14 years old when his second chil d was born. Careful analysis of the dates will reveal tha t Mr. Holleman has chosen the wrong William HOLLYMAN as th e husband of Mary CHAMBERS. Going back to the evidence abo ut the family of Mary CHAMBERS HOLLEMAN PITTMAN we find tha t: Richard JARRETT, Margeryus first husband, was still ali ve in 1671. (Margeryus maiden name is so far unknown to us. ) In 1672, Margery has already remarried, and is executin g her decud first husbandus estate as Margery CHAMBERS. I n 1677, William CHAMBERSu nuncupative (oral) last will & te stament is recorded, names SwifeT (this was Margery, name d administratrix), step-son Charles JARRETT, and his Stw o children.T Also in 1677, William CHAMBERS Jr. chooses hi s own guardian. (I think a boy had to be 14 years of age o r older to do that ... so that means William CHAMBERS Jr. w as born at least 14 years before 1677 -- in or before 1663 . Margaret LEE in Smithfield thinks he might have had to b e age 18 -- so he might have been born as early as 1659.) I n 1681, William CHAMBERS Jr. Sbeing of full ageT asked th e court for his inheritance and the guardianship of his sis ter, Mary, still a minor in 1681. If Sfull ageT is 21 year s old, then he was born about 1659, and Margery JARRETT CHA MBERS is his step-mother.
In early 1687, Mary CHAMBERS married William HOLL EMAN. In May 1687, Mr. HOLLEMAN petitioned the court for h er inheritance to be released to him, which indicates tha t she was still under-age when she married. If Mary was Ma rgeryus daughter, then she would have been born between 167 1 and 1677, and that makes her a maximum age of 16 years ol d at the time of her marriage to William HOLLEMAN. So no w it seems probable that Margery is also Maryus step-mother . Since a girl was of Sfull ageT at age 18 she could hav e been born as early as 1663. But no earlier.
In 1704, William HOLLEMAN died. That means he an d Mary were married to each other for 17 years -- plenty o f time to have several children, but Mary could not have H OLLEMAN children older than age 17 at the time of William u s death. Ten years later, Thomas PITMAN Jr. and his ( thi rd ) wife Elizabeth Lancaster deeded 125 acres of land t o "step-son" William HOLLYMAN 16 Jan 1714, in Surry County , Virginia Robert Lancaster , the father of Thomas Jr.'s w ife Elizabeth, of Upper Parish, on the Blackwater, Isle o f Wight County, wrote a will dated 28 Apr 1720, which was r ecorded 23 May 1720. In his will he named his daughter Eli zabeth PITTMAN, his son-in-law Thomas PITTMAN, and his gran dchildren Samuel, Lettis and Ann PITTMAN. This document in dicates that Elizabeth was the mother of these three childr en of Thomas PITMAN, Jr. Elizabeth's son Samuel must hav e been born about 1710, since he seems to have been a lega l adult when his fatherus will was written in 1730. A subse quent document indicates two more children of Elizabeth. A fter the death of Thomas PITMAN, Jr., Robert Lancaster , J r., Elizabeth Lancaster PITTMANus brother, made the followi ng deposition in Isle of Wight County, VA: These are to inf orm the Worp. Court that I the Subscriber heard the Thoma s PITMAN say seven Months after his Sickness that he made h is Will and told me that he had given to his Son Thomas PIT MAN his Entery of Land lying up the Creek, To his son Samue l PITMAN the Plantation whereon his brother lived, To his S on Robert PITMAN a parcel of Land lying over the ------ Bra nch , To his Son Ambrose PITMAN a parcel lying between hi s son Thomas and his Son Samuel, To his son John and his so n Arthur a piece lying up the Meadow Branch to be divide d between them and to his two youngest Sons Sampson and Jos eph he had given a Plantation whereon he lived to be divide d between them when they come of Age, and to his six Daught ers he had given Five Pounds a piece; and that he did belie ve he should not alter what he had done. (Sd.) Robt. Lancas ter At a Court held for the Isle of Wight County the 28 da y of September 1730 The above deposition was presented an d being duly proved in Court was Admitted to record . Test. James INGLES, Clk. Court

One source ( Tennessee Cragon's and Their Kin , undated ), postulates that Thomas PITMAN d 1730 was a gra ndson of CAPT. Thomas PITMAN (b ca 1614 d ca 1684-88) , an d that his father was Thomas PITMAN b ca 1659 who made a de ed of gift in 1680 to "William PITMAN son of Thomas PITMA N Jr." In that case, Thomas PITMAN d 1730 would have bee n born about 1679 (or about 20 years after the birth of hi s father), and would have been one year old in 1680... clea rly not old enough to have a son named William! The autho r of Tennessee Cragon's seemed unaware that Elizabeth Lanca ster was Thomas PITMAN Jr.'s last wife, and appears to hav e based his "time line" on the assumption that she was hi s first wife, making him appear much younger than he was . In fact, Thomas PITMAN Jr. was of legal age to witnes s a deed in Sep. 1671, which means he was born closer to 16 50.
