A letter from Betsy Pittman, Valdese, NC, July 1995: Follow ing is my rationale for the connection of Revolutionary Wa r Joseph Pitman to the Rich Square MM Joseph Pitman of Nort hampton County, as his son: The Revolutionary War Pension A pplication of Thomas Pitman of Buncombe County, North Carol ina (R8275) states that he died at age 60 on 15 March 1814 , thus making him born 1754. This is the birth year of Thom as Pitman, son of Joseph Pitman of the Rich Square MM. Bot h Thomas Pitman of Rich Square MM and Thomas of Buncombe Co unty Revolutionary War Pension had a brother named Joseph . The Revolutionary War Pension Application of Joseph Pitma n of Burke County, North Carolina (S7314) states that he hi red a substitute "in consequence of the situation of my fam ily." Who would better appreciate the "situation" and serv e for his brother, than Thomas, who states that he did serv e as a substitute for his brother, Joseph. Thomas married D icey Newton in Edgecombe County 25 Aug 1793, so they did co me from the area where Quaker Joseph was living. The 16 No v 1776 record of Rich Square MM mentions "Joseph Pitman o f Edgecomb Co." Both Thomas and Joseph came to the mountain s of western NC, after the Revolution. According to the Ric h Square MM minutes, Joseph Pitman was born 8 Oct 1756; acc ording to Joseph Pitman's Revolutionary War Pension Applica tion, he was born 10 Sep 1757. A difference of less tha n a year is as close as a seventy-five year-old-man might b e expected to come when he had no written record. In many o f these pension applications, the man does not remember exa ctly when he served and guesses within a year or two. He us ually remembers the season of the year. And, in Joseph's ca se, his birth was in the fall, either September or October . And the birth was early in the month (8th or 10th). Havin g read many of these pension applications, I am willing t o accept the slight difference (less than a year) for the t wo birth dates; this slight difference is not enough to cau se me to negate the assumption that this is one man.

According to Revolutionary War Thomas' statement, both he a nd his brother, Joseph, were coopers. It would be nice to f ind that Quaker Joseph was a cooper, for a son usually lear ned a trade from his father -- or find another instance o f Quaker Joseph's signature. I was hoping for an inventor y of his estate that showed tools that a cooper would use , but there is no estate folder for him, assuming that he d ied in Edgecombe County. In 1776, Joseph Pitman of Edgecomb e was dismissed from Rich Square MM for proposing marriag e to one outside of the Society. Being thus released from o bservances of the Quaker faith, he was free to serve in th e Revolution should he feel the desire. I imagine that is w hy you questioned his being a Quaker; I did, too, until w e got to the bottom of it! Joseph Pitman (Revolutionary Wa r Pension Application S7314, Burke Co NC) married Sarah Har ris, daughter of John and Ann Harris of Granville County, N orth Carolina In his application, Joseph states that h e enlisted in Granville County. John Harris, father-in-la w of Joseph Pitman, had given Joseph land on Aaron's Cree k (that later fell in Person County; Caswell County Deed G: 248). Person County was formed in 1791 from Caswell, whic h was formed in 1777 from Orange County. Orange County wa s formed in 1752 from Johnston, Bladen and Granville Counti es. In 1760, Edgecombe and Granville Counties shared a comm on border. In 1805, Joseph Pitman appears for the last tim e on the Person County tax list. On 25 Aug 1806, Joseph sel ls two parcels of Person County land, one to his wife's (Sa rah's) sister's husband, John Wilkerson (Person County D eed D:17) and one to Sarah's brother, Overton Harris (Perso n County Deed D:59). In 1807, Joseph Pitman (and other P itmans) appears for the first time on the Burke County ta x list ... It is my intent to do some work in the Edgecomb e County Pitman deeds, to try to tie Quaker Joseph to his l and. He seems to die without a trace of a record; I need t o check the court records for a mention of his death. If Qu aker Joseph was born about 1722 (I don't believe the fact t hat both he and his wife were born the exact same day; thi s must be an error in the transcription of the Quaker minut es), he may have died about 1785-1795.
