Notes for J
R. CHARLES LAWRENCE:
Charles was probably born in Virginia before his father Cha rles and mother Amey sold their land in 1770.

Charles made his will on 8 December 1806. He did no t mention his children by name. Wife Betsy and brothers Ro bert and John are named executors. He instructs that as mu ch of his property that can be spared be sold to purchase a s much land for the support of his family "which land is t o continue for the use of the widow until the children is o f age."

Apparently when Charles came to Sumner County , Tenne ssee, he did not purchase land but lived with his brother J ohn. Charles first appears on the 1798 Sumner County ta x list immediately after John Lawrence . He also appears o n the 1799 Sumner County tax list after John Lawrence . O n the 1799 tax list John is listed with 200 acres "on Cumbe rland River" while Charles is listed with no acres.
Land to support his family is not purchased until 4 N ovember 1833, when land is purchased per instructions of th e will of Charles Lawrence for his heirs by Robert Lawren ce , executor of the will of Charles Lawrence . At this ti me, for the sum of $200, a tract of land containing 50 acre s on the waters of Sinking Creek is purchased from Richar d Vincent of Warren County. This land is described as th e same tract of land Richard Vincent conveyed to Elizabet h Lawrence during her widowhood.[FN:Sumner County Deed Boo k 13, page 482.:FN] Evidently the land was conveyed to Eli zabeth after Charles' death for her and her childrens use , but was not purchased until 1833.
Later transactions involving this tract of land esta blishes the children of Charles and Elizabeth that were liv ing at the time of the purchase in 1833. Amah Lawrence ( a daughter of Charles) married John Moss in Sumner Count y and had two daughters, Mary Jane born circa 1814 who mar ried Joseph C. Johnson, and Emmaliza (Eliza) born circa 181 6 who married Anderson Kirkpatrick. On 12 January 1849, Ro bert Lawrence (a son of Charles), Anderson Kirkpatrick an d his wife Emmaliza, Joseph C. Johnson and his wife Mary Ja ne sell to Lemuel Lawrence (another son of Charles) the sam e tract of land mentioned earlier for the sum of $80.[FN:Su mner County Deed Book 21, pages 191-192.:FN] It would app ear at this time that Amah is deceased and her daughters, M ary Jane and Emmaliza, along with Amah's brother Robert, ar e selling their share of the property to their brother Lemu el.
On the 17 December 1850, John and William (two mor e sons of Charles) sell this same aforementioned tract of l and to Lemuel for a sum of $80.[FN:Sumner County Deed Boo k 22, pages 161-162.:FN] Again, it appears that John and W illiam are selling their share of the property to their bro ther Lemuel.
From these transactions, we can establish that the re were five heirs of Charles alive when the tract of lan d was purchased in 1833, Amah, Robert, John, William, and L emuel. Each of these five would have had a $40 inheritanc e in the land purchased for $200. Each, the heirs of Ama h (who evidently had died prior to 1949), Robert, John, an d William sell their shares to their brother Lemuel in 184 9 and 1850 for their $40 inheritance. Lemuel sells this tr act of land to Mitchell R. Moore on 5 January 1856, for a s um of $500.
Another possible son of Charles and Elizabeth may b e a Charles Lawrence who enlisted as a private in Capt. S arver's regiment from Sumner County in the War of 1812. A mong his War of 1812 military records is a power of attorne y to Abram Trigg for his wages. Abram Trigg also served a s bondsman for the marriage of Amah Lawrence and John Moss . This Charles died in 1815. Prepared by: Paul E. Lawrenc e , 6533 Coachleigh Way, Kingstowne, Virginia 22315, (70 3) 922-8792
