iii. | JAMES R. SMITH, b. 1844, Perry County Alabama; d. 1869. |
Notes for JAMES R. SMITH: James R. Smith enlisted in Company K of the 28th Alabama Volunteer Infantry Regiment at Perryville, Alabama on March 29, 1862 at the age of eighteen [18] years. His service records states that he 1) was sent to the hospital at Glasgow, Kentucky on September 12, 1862;2) that he was a prisoner of war in Kentucky; 3) that he was later paroled and exchanged by Colonel Robert; 4) that he was on the roll of honor on August 10, 1864; and 5) that he was appointed First [1st] Corporal and later promoted to Sergeant. From this record, it can be determined that James R. Smith was with the 28th Regiment during General Braxton Bragg's invasion of Kentucky in 1862.The Confederate Army occupied Glasgow, Kentucky on September 12, 1862 which was the day James' record states that he entered the hospital there. The records of other soldiers in James' regiment state that the sick were left behind in Glasgow and became prisoners as General Bragg raced off in an unsuccessful effort to outrun General Simon Boliver Buckner's Union forces to occupy Lexington, Kentucky.Using the same method, other records state that prisoners of the 28th Regiment were exchanged at Vicksburg on board the steamer Maria Denning on November 15, 1862 and on other steamers at other times. It is highly probable that James became a prisoner at the Glasgow, Kentucky hospital, was held by the Federals for two months (mid-September to mid-November) and exchanged at Vicksburg with other prisoners of the 28th Regiment. How he came to be on the roll of honor is not known. However, it is known that the roll of honor was for soldiers who, in the opinion of their comrades and officers, had displayed exceptional courage in battle. The 28th Regiment was engaged in the defense of Atlanta on August 10, 1864, and it was here that James was selected for the roll of honor. The battle of Atlanta began on July 22, 1864, and it was during this action that James R. Smith won the admiration of his comrades by his conduct in battle. James was obviously a loyal and efficient soldier because he was given positions of responsibility as a non-commissioned officer in his company.[James H. Walker and Robert Curren, Those Gallant Men of the Twenty-Eighth Alabama Confederate Infantry Regiment (Heritage Books, Inc., Bowie, Maryland, 1997) p. 330] |
