The Name Changes: Leclerc to Leclair
John Baptiste Leclair was residing in Lewiston, Maine when on April 20, 1899, at the age of "eighteen years and three months"; he enlisted in the ARMY OF THE UNITED STATES. In Portland, Maine, at the Army recruitment office, he signed his name on the "Declaration of Recruit" as "John Leclair." His father, Felix, signed his name on the "Consent In Case of Minor", at Lewiston, Maine on April 14, 1899, as "Felix Leclerc" and that of his son as "John Leclerc". On March 13, 1903 at the age of 22 years and 2 months, John Leclair voluntarily reenlisted in the Army. On his second enlistment papers he still listed his residence as Lewiston Maine.On his first enlistment papers he was described as having "Brown eyes, Black hair, Dark complexion," and as being "Five feet Five ½ inches high."On the second set of enlistment papers he is said to be "5 feet 7 inches high."He listed his occupation upon his 1899 enlistment as "Laborer" and upon his 1903 enlistment as that of a "Blacksmith."John Leclair was a veteran of the Spanish-American War.He served from the state of Rhode Island as a mechanic in Troop F of the U.S. 5th Calvary.It was while serving his second enlistment that he married.The National Archives of Veterans Records lists the following as "Place(s) Veteran Lived After Service":Warwick, R. I; West Warwick, R. I.; Woonsocket, R. I.; MA; Providence, R. I. Cranston, R. I.
While John Leclair was in the cavalry he also worked for a time as a blacksmith and he continued the trade after he was discharged from the military.He shod his last horse in 1917.For 32 years (until his retirement) he worked as a blacksmith foreman for boiler companies, including the Providence Body Co.He and his wife had been residents of Cranston,
Rhode Island for more than 25 years when they passed away, respectively, in 1956 and 1957.
