The Ledford Family Tree

Updated August 21, 2007

The following is a brief glimpse of the Ledford Family Tree dating back to Aley Ledford of Harlan County, Kentucky, who crossed the Cumberland Gap to settle down in Kentucky in 1809.

The early Ledford's originated in England. The Ledford name is believed to be derived from "a man from Lydford" in Devon, England. (source: The Heraldry Center, Northgate Canterbury, Kent, England) The Ledford's moved to Augusta County, Virginia in the mid-1700's and bought land on the Roanoke River from Colonel James Patton in 1750, 1753, and 1754. A group of Ledfords from North Carolina and Virginia traveled by covered wagon along the Daniel Boone Trail, through the Cumberland Gap in 1809. Along the way, a large storm blew a large tree down and destroyed several of the wagons. The group disbanded sending half of the Ledfords to Tennessee and the other half (which included Aley Ledford) to the bluegrass mountains of Kentucky where we've been ever since. A grant of several hundred acres in Harlan County, Ky, to Aley Ledford in 1819 began a rich history in the area which remains to this day.

Most of the research for this was conducted by Chas E. Ledford in 1978. Along with the help of Ruth (Ledford) Duff, Faye (Duff) Spencer, Dorothy (Pikulinski) Zelek and many, many online resources, this is only a glimpse of the family history.

We must never forget our history and our ancestors who have watched over us in life and in death. - Andrew K. Ledford

The Family tree is coming. It takes a day or two to build it online.
