This tree is in its "autumn phase" -- not full foliage, much of it missing -- just what i happened to diligently create 10 years ago, and link with what others diligently created, and what i recently, hurriedly added in direct ascendancy to convey at least as many generations back as i know.That is, i have a lot more information that spreads the branches outward than yet appears on this tree.In some cases i have more information that takes the tree "higher", further back in time, in others it takes the tree wider.
My father's family is Lederer, my mother's is Strasser, and it is those two families that form the base of the tree.Naturally, with each generation back that one goes, more surnames appear.In the "purest" sense, it doubles with each additional generation.But when cousins marry cousins, the formula doesn't quite hold; also when there are multiple marriages due to death or divorce.
(As a side note, the simple rule i've come up with to know how many lineages i'm keeping track of is this: 2 to the power of x, where x is the 'generations back' i'm looking at.If i'm looking at my generation, it's 0 generations back.2 to the 0 power = 1 surname, Lederer.1 generation back:2 to the 1st = 2 surnames, Lederer and Strasser.2 generations back: 2 squared = 4 surnames, Lederer/Hyman and Strasser/Gans.When you get 6 generations back (puts my family in the early-mid 1800s) its 64 lineages.I keep pushing back and doubling the lineages to research.)
