The Holwill Home Page
I have just started to research my family; the Holwills. It is a West Country name deriving from Holy Well. For example there is an Iron Age Hill Fort in Parracombe, North Devon called Holwill Castle. I have, through talking to my family traced the family back to North Devon in the 1790's, and am now starting the more difficult research. If you are a Holwill or are related to one, please feel free to contact me. My great-great-great-grandfather, James Holwill was born in Weare Giffard near Bideford in North Devon. He later moved toa village called Stoke Rivers near Barnstaple where he remained for some time as all his children were born there. His son Joseph moved to Yeovil in Somerset where he married a lady by the name of Tryphena Pinkett. The family remained in Yeovil for some time as several of Joseph's grandchildren died there, although the branch that I am descended from moved to Tedington in Middlesex and then to Guildford, Surrey. I live in Hampshire although I grew up in the West Country. My parents, Richard & Helen Holwill have been living in Bideford, North Devon since 1983 when they moved there from Guildford. | The Holwill Home Page Updated May 5, 2004 |
