1. JOHN¹ SUMNER was born 1618 in London, England, and died 1670 in Nansemond Co., VA. He married (1) UNKNOWN. He married (2) ELIZABETH THOMPSON 1639 in Elizabeth River, Norfolk, VA.

Below from Julian Anderson:

John Sumner was in Bridewell Hospital (orphanage), established 1553 whose records are on microfilm at Beckingham, Kent. This John was listed in Filby's list of immigrants and in court records as having been transported 9-2-1631. (Betty Sumner Helms - thru Sumner Family Assoc.)

Children of JOHN SUMNER and UNKNOWN are:

2.	i.		FRANCIS² SUMNER, b. Abt. 1644, Probably Virginia; d. July 04, 1676, Surry County, VA.
	ii.		JOSEPH SUMNER, b. Abt. 1641.

Notes for JOSEPH SUMNER:
Eventually migrated to Stafford County, VA. Had a son Joseph and other issue known to extant records in Virginia.

3.	iii.		RICHARD SUMNER, b. Abt. 1643, VA; d. 1729, Bertie County, NC.
	iv.		WILLIAM SUMNER, b. Abt. 1645.

Notes for WILLIAM SUMNER:
Youngest son of his father. Appears to have been the last surviving son of his immigrant father. A militia captain and Justice of Nansemond Co. (see 1704 Rent Roll) His will is extant in NC records. (consult Mitchell's NC Wills Testators, 1665-1900, copywright c. 1983)

JOHN² SUMNER , JR., b. 1640; d. 1695.
