Francis was survived by his widow Sophia _________and administered his estate in Onslow County, giving bond to protect the interest of children of minority age for whom she was named guardian. There were eight children born and surviving, including one or more grown children.

6. JETHRO⁴ SUMNER , SR. (JOHN³, FRANCIS², JOHN¹) was born 1703 in Upper Parish, Nansemond Co., VA, and died Abt. 1750 in Suffolk, VA. He married MARGARET SULLIVAN Abt. 1724, daughter of DANIEL SULLIVAN.

Jethro Sr. was Vestryman Upper Parish 1743 (when Vestry records begin), Church Warden 1743-1747, 1749 until death; church building committee 1748 (see also St. Paul's Church history); Justice, Nansemond Co. 1735; tobacco inspector 1750.

Jethro and wife Margaret co-owned land 1728 with William & Bridget Sumner in Maiden Hair Neck, Chowan Co., NC; Jethro and Margaret bought out widow Bridget's share and land in Upper Parish 1736. Jethro owned Constant's Warehouse i 1738 which became part of Suffolk when it was chartered in 1742. Jethro sold 50 acres for establishing Suffolk.
