11. JOSEPH CHESTNUT⁶ SUMNER , SR. (JOSEPH⁵, FRANCIS⁴, JOHN³, FRANCIS², JOHN¹) was born 1761 in Onslow Co., NC, and died December 30, 1827 in Emanuel Co., GA. He married NANCY CHESTNUTT Bef. 1787 in Jefferson Co., GA, daughter of ALEXANDER CHESTNUTT and MARY.

Drew land in 1827 GA land lottery as soldier - granted 300 acres in 1787 Burke Co., GA - received 1790. in 1805 lottery drew 202 1/2 acres in Wilkenson Co., GA. In 1818 drew land in Emanuel Co., GA.

Buried in family cemetary - Hwy. 57 Emanuel Co., GA.

Moved together with brother Richard from Onslow Co., NC to Burke Co., GA where they were both paying taxes on land originally granted to "Chestnut". The land was originally granted to Alexander Chestnutt who had apparently died as the land was in the posession of Mary Chestnutt, believed to have been his wife.

Joseph was a Revolutionary soldier and his service is documented in a Reprint of Land Lottery, 1827, published 1928 on page 107: "Joseph Sumner, Sr., Revolutionary Soldier of Swains District, Emanuel County, drew Lot No. 10, Section 3." Joseph's uncle, Francis Sumner (his father's brother), had served as a Private in the 8th North Carolina Regiment under Captain James Armstrong and was captured by British General Cornwallis and paroled after the battle of Guilford Courthouse. This same uncle was also listed as "sick at Valley Forge".
Joseph's first cousin was Jethro Sumner Jr., Brig. General, North Carolina Continental Line, Rev. War.

During the Civil War, 9 of Joseph's grandsons answered the call, as did 12 great-grandsons an 3 grandnephews.
