Enrolled: July 27, 1861 Company Muster Roll, Sept. 9, 1861 Listed as "Deserted". Company Muster Rolls from November 1861 through August 1863 showed under Remarks: Archibald Deserted his Company at Staunton Sept. 16, 1861 and was never paid. John H. Austin Co. K 11th VA Infantry "The Valley Regulators" Enrolled: July 24, 1861 at Manassas, Va. by Col. D. A. Langhorn. Have not determined why John was in Manassas or if his enlistment there had any thing to do with the battle? 1st Battle of Bull Run (Manassas) was on July 21, 1861. Company Muster Roll, September and October 1962 listed as Absent. Remarks: Wounded on March 10, 1962 and sent to hospital. Company Muster Rolls all show John Absent, wounded and in hospital until November & December Muster Roll dated Jan 7, 1864, listed as Absent. At home with wounds. Company Muster Rolls dated February 24, 1864 and August 26, 1864 listed John as Present. On April 3, 1865 John was captured at Jackson Hospital in Richmond and turned over to the Provost Marshall on April 21, 1865. Richmond was evacuated by the Confederate Army on April 1 - 3, 1865. From the information that John was in the hospital we can assume the retreating army didn't take the people that were in the hospital. On April 23, 1865 he was transferred as a Prisoner of War from Libby Prison in Richmond to Newport News. Prior to the Union Army's occupation of Richmond, Libby Prison had been a prison for Union Officers. After the occupation the Union Forces used it for Confederate prisoners. Although Gen. R.E. Lee surrendered on April 9, 1865 as late as May 9, 1865 Libby prison was full of Confederate soldiers. Note: President Lincoln was shot on April 14, 1865, five days after the surrender!! On June 15, 1865 on an Oath of Allegiance form, John was listed as a resident of Bedford County, being 6 feet tall, having dark hair and complexion with blue eyes. On December 15, 1865 John appears on a list of soldiers to whom passports were issued in Chimboraze Hospital, Richmond, Va. The passport was to go to Liberty, Va. Cornelius Armentrout Co. C 1st Virginia Calvary. "The Rockbridge Rangers". Enlisted: May 21, 1861 as a Private by Mathew K. White Reported "Present" on all Company Muster Rolls from July/August 1861 until January/February 1862. On the November/ December Company Muster Roll, under the Remarks there was notation "Teamster in the QM Dept." On the March/ April Company Muster Roll. Under "Remarks" there was a notation: No horse, Teamster for Quartermaster, Absent with baggage. Reported "Present" on all Company Muster Rolls from July/August 1862 until May/ June 1863. On the Company Muster Roll for July/ August 1863. He was reported "Absent" with the Remark that he was "captured with a wagon train near Hagerstown on July 5, 1863". Company Muster Rolls from July/August 1863 until July/August 1864 all musters reported him "Absent Captured in Penn". Hagerstown is in Maryland just south of the Pennsylvania border. Why did muster rolls say "captured in Pennsylvania? The 1st Cavalry was under Gen. J.E.B. Stuart and part of Gen. Joseph E. Johnston's Army of the Shenandoah that was at Gettysburg. Somewhere between Gettysburg and Hagerstown is where Cornelius was captured. If the date of July 5th, on the Muster Roll, is correct then he wasn't captured until after the battle at Gettysburg. Probably on the way back south and the captors put him with the prisoners that were captured at Gettysburg. Then on a "Prisoner of War" report from Fort Delaware, Del. indicates he was captured at Gettysburg. The Prisoner of War report show his name as C. Armentrod. On September 26, 1863 he was sent from Fort Delaware, Del. to Point Lookout, Md. on this document there was a notation that the name spelling was corrected. The next document indicates he was 1 of 3,038 prisoners paroled at Point Lookout, Md. on February 18, 1865. Tombstone inscription on grave in New Monmouth Cemetery, Lexington, Va. indicates Cornelius was a 3rd Sergeant. J. E. Leighton, Pvt.
