Notes for Joel Jefferson Melton:
October 27, 1828
Joel J. Melton infant orphan of John Melton dec. came into court and made choice of Thomas Appleberry for his son who thereupon came into court and with Seay entered into and acknowledged a bond cidedionco as the Law directs.

Jefferson Melton first appears in the Fluvanna tax list in 1829.
The 1830 tax list shows Jefferson Melton, but no Joel, yet the census shows Joel J. Melton
Joel who married Elizabeth Appleberry left VA in 1829; he appears on the 1829 tax list, but not on the 1830, and the 1850 census says he had a child born in KY in 1829.
Joel J. is missing from the tax list from 1831 to 1834. In 1835, Jefferson J. reappears, is listed that way in 1836, disappears in 1837, and Joel J. reappears in 1838 and continues to be listed as Joel(l) J. through 1845, which is consistent with his death. After that, there is no Jefferson or Joel through 1850.
