John Harris Melton came to Cole Co. in 1846 on a big wagon train from Lincoln Co., Ky. He is the son of John "Early" Melton and Catherine Coldiron who was married in Pulaski Co., Ky in 1811. Joel "sold" him some land (family legend says gave) which he promptly sold and bought some farther down the road in Miller Co. John H. married Eliza Catherine Pittman also from Lincoln Co. soon after arriving in Cole Co. They raised a large family and remained in Miller and Cole Cos.

  ii.   CATHERINE MELTON, b. Abt. 1812; m. DAVID R. WOODS, November 11, 1853, Stanford, Kentucky, Lincoln County by McRoberts and Pres. minister.

ONATHAN MELTON, SR.:
According to the research of Herman Melton in SASSAFRASS SPROUTS page 90, Eliel's parents are Jonothan Melton,Clark CO, GA and Tabatha Stroud of Hillsboro, NC. Jonothan died 1815. In his will dates Feb. 15, 1815, Jonothan named children Ethan, Leal(Eliel), Bobby, Lucinda, Stroud, William, Sippy, Buekener and Jonothan. The will was probated June 5, 1815. Tabatha Stroud was the d/o John Stroud and Sarah Connelly and was born April, 1772 and died 1852 in Monroe, GA.

DAR records say that he served in the 1st NC Batallion, Roll of Captain Griffin, John McRee's Company, Commander Thomas Clark. He enlisted April 6, 1776 and was discharged Nov. 10, 1778

His will was recorded February 13, 1815 and probated June 5, 1815 in Clarke County, GA

State of Georgia, Wilkes County, To all to whom these presents may concern KNOW ye that I Benjamin Sims of the said County & State have named constituted and by these presents do name constitute & appoint Sterling Peebles of Brunswick County, Commonwealth of Virginia my attorney for me & in my name to execute a deed of conveyance for a certain tract of land situate lying and being in the said County of Brunswick on Meherrin River containing five hundred & forty three acres . . . unto William Edward Brodnax . . . giving and hereby granting unto my said attorney my full power and authority to use and execute all such acts and devised in the law as shall be necessary for the conveyance of said land and generally to do and execute in the premises as fully as I myself could do if I was personally present ratifying and confirming and allowing all and whatsoever my said attorney shall lawfully do or cause to be done therein by virtue of these presents In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 20th Day of October 1790 . . .
