1. PIERRE LEJEUNE DIT1 BRIARD I was born 1595 in Brie France1, and died 1700 in Port Royal, Annapolis, NS, Canada2. He married UNKNOWN3 Bef. 1623 in Pt Royal, Aacadie Nouvelle Acose4. She died Unknown.

Notes for P
IERRE LEJEUNE DIT BRIARD I:
"The vast majority of the Acadian immigrants shared a common socioeconomic heritage. Fully three-fourths of the settlers in the 1671 census of Acadie were former peasants of the labourureur caste. Laboureurs constituted the highest of the five peasant classes in France of the ancien regime. Industrious, frugal, and tied together by an intricate extended family system, they shared a deep and abiding attachment to the land they framed.

Only the religious wars of late sixteenth- and early seventeenth- century France, which destroyed the meager economic gains of their families, could have uprooted them from their home provinces and driven them across the Atlantic into the Maritime Canadian wilderness. Their peasant heritage would profoundly influence the course of Acadian cultural development."

The above quote from Barry Jean Ancelet's CAJUN COUNTRY, page 5

There is some discussion about the origin of the "dit Briard" affixed to the early settlers' names. It is possible that they attached the tail end to indicate their place of origin (a common practice in France). In this case it is either Brie, near Paris, or Les Biards, Avranche, Manche in France. If so, they would probably have been cod-fishermen by trade. It is almost certainly the first, since most of these families farmed for a living.
