Ricketts, Reason, who may or may not be related to Samuel's wife, Nancy Ricketts Teal is also listed. I am not sure if this Joshua Teal was the son of William Teal Jr. If so, Joshua was double counted in the 1830 census of Anson Co., NC since he also appears in 1830 and Campbell Co., GA.
EVALUATION OF THE 1800 AND 1810 CENSUS RECORDS
We cannot assume that Lacy or Elizabeth were living in a household in Pitt Co., NC in 1800 or 1810. Some members of the Teal family from Pitt County had already moved to Anson County in western North Carolina by 1800 and later moved to Georgia. But by studying the census, we can at least eliminate certain households because they did not have a child Lacy or Elizabeth's age in the census record. By the 1820 census, Lacy Hattaway would have been 25 years old and could have been working outside of his parents' home as a farm laborer. In all 3 census (1800, 1810, and 1820), if we could assume that Lacy Hattaway was always living in Pitt Co., NC, the only consistent possibility as Lacy's father was John Hattaway.
* Notes a family member of Lacy or Elizabeth's age. In 1800, both Lacy and Elizabeth would have been approximately 4 or 5 years old.
**Notes a family member of Lacy or Elizabeth's age. In 1810, both Lacy and Elizabeth would have been approximately 14 or 15 years old.
Possible Hattaway parentage:
Name 1800 1810
Mrs. Sarah (1)
James (3)
William (2)
Thomas (1)
John (2 ) (1)
William (2)
Shadrach (2)
In parenthesis are the number of male children Lacy's age in the household. Blanks indicate that that head of household does not appear in the census. Only John Hattaway appears in both census. Sarah, James, William, and Thomas had either moved or were deceased by 1810. Nathan Hattaway, the only other Hattaway in Pitt County in 1800, does not appear in the 1810 census either.
Of particular interest are the households of William and Shadrach Hattaway, living side by side, in 1810. Both households list 2 males (possibly brothers) of the same age group. William listed in the 1800 census was most likely William Sr., who happened to have 2 males who would have fallen into the age group of the William (possibly William Jr.) shown in 1810. The dates are about 2 years off to include Lacy in either household of Shadrach or William Hattaway, but it is still a possibility.
Also of note, a James Hattaway of Pitt Co., NC married Diana Meeks, daughter of Walter Meeks (born about 1735 in Beaufort Co., NC; died about 1787 in Pitt Co., NC). James is supposedly the son of Reuben Hattaway. Walter Meeks' son, Caleb Meeks, married Rutha Hattaway, who was perhaps the daughter of David and Susannah Hattaway. Walter Meeks was the father of Nancy Meeks, born about 1763 who married Shadrack Mayo, and Lucy Meeks who married Littleberry Worsley.
Possible Teal Parentage:
Name 1800 1810
William (2)
James (2) (1)
Phobe (1)
James (2)
Moses (3) (3)
Jacob (1)
Catherine (1)
In parenthesis are the number of female children Elizabeth's age in the household. Blanks indicate that that head of household does not appear in the census. Only James and Moses Teal appear in both census. William, Phobe, and James had either moved, remarried, or were deceased by 1810. Coley Teal does not appear in the 1810 census either.
