Notes on the Estate of Lacy and Elizabeth Hattaway

The names of known or potential relatives have been placed in bold print. The estate is referred to as the estate of "Lacy Hattaway, deceased" although Lacy Hattaway died in 1868, his widow Elizabeth Teal Hattaway died some sixteen years later in 1884.

1. James E. Worthan, the administrator of the estate, was the husband of Lacy and Elizabeth's granddaughter, Mary Ann Elizabeth Teal, who was the daughter of Mary Hattaway and Jesse Teal. James Worthan may have also been related to Elizabeth Teal Hattaway; his mother was Malinda Delilah Teal, who married Duncan Worthan in Campbell Co., GA in 1844.

2. J. C. Northcutt and / or J. E. Northcutt may be one and the same person. Their relation to this family is not known. Lacy and Elizabeth's son-in-law, Meshack Teal, was the last person hanged in Campbell County, GA, in 1856 for the shooting of a Mr. Northcutt.

3. David Hattaway, also listed as D. Hattaway, was Lacy and Elizabeth Teal Hattaway's son.

4. L. Cook was Luther Napoleon Bonaparte Cook, the widower of Lacy and Elizabeth Teal Hattaway's youngest daughter, Eliza Ann Hattaway Cook. "Bud" and Eliza married in Campbell Co., GA in 1869, but Eliza died in 1877 as a result of childbirth.

5. Mary Teal, was Lacy and Elizabeth Teal Hattaway's daughter. Mary Hattaway married Jesse Teal in Campbell Co., GA in 1844.

6. James Teal. Most likely James Dillard Teal who was the son of M. Emanuel Teal and Margarette McKivins. He was a great grandson of Revolutionary War soldier, Emanuel Teal Jr., by his son George Washington "Wash" Teal. In addition, Wash Teal married Sarah Little who was the daughter of Isaac Little and Delilah Teal, who married in Pitt Co., NC on May 2, 1794.

7. M. C. Teal was Lacy and Elizabeth's Teal Hattaway's grandson-in-law. Matthew Comar Teal married Louisa Hattaway in Campbell Co., GA in 1872. Louisa was the oldest daughter of Emanuel and Amanda Mapp Hattaway. Note: Matthew Comar Teal was the brother of James Dillard Teal.

8. Thomas Pate. No known relation to Eliza Pate Hattaway, who was Lacy and Elizabeth Hattaway's daughter-in-law. Eliza Pate Hattaway was the daughter of Henderson Pate and Sarah Ann C. Lane. It is not known if Thomas might have been Henderson Pate's first name.

9. Mary Hattaway was Lacy and Elizabeth Teal Hattaway's daughter-in-law. Mary Cash married David Hattaway in Campbell Co., GA in 1856.

10. Tomey Teal. There is no known relation between Thomas Teal and Elizabeth Teal Hattaway or Matthew Comar Teal. Most likely, Tomey Teal was Lacy and Elizabeth's grandson-in-law. A Thomas A. Teal married Frances L. Teal in Campbell Co., GA in 1872. Francis was the second daughter of Mary Hattaway and Jesse Teal.

11. Margarette Teal had no known relation to Elizabeth Teal Hattaway other than being the mother of Matthew Comar Teal who married Elizabeth's granddaughter, Louisa Hattaway. Margarette McKivins, who married M. Emanuel Teal in Campbell Co., GA in 1844, was also the mother of James Dillard Teal. Her aunt Mary McKivins was married to a Thomas Teal. The Rapes listed as purchasing items of Lacy and Elizabeth's estate were also related to McKivins and Teals.

12. L. Hattaway was Lacy and Elizabeth Teal Hattaway's oldest grandson, Lacy L. Hattaway was the oldest son of Emanuel and Amanda Mapp Hattaway. He died of disease in 1886.

13. L. Teal was Lacy and Elizabeth Teal Hattaway's granddaughter. Louisa Hattaway was the oldest child of Emanuel and Amanda Mapp Hattaway. Lou married Matthew Comar Teal in Campbell Co., GA in 18---.

14. Pernina Carter, also listed as P. Carter. Pernina Teal married Joseph Carter in Campbell Co., GA in 1841. She is also listed under "distributions made to heirs" and is the only person whose voucher does not list her specific relation. It does list that she is related to Elizabeth Teal Hattaway, but does not list that she is related to Lacy Hattaway. Because of this and the amount she received, she may have been a sister or half sister to Elizabeth.

15. Emanuel Hattaway, also listed as E. Hattaway, was Lacy and Elizabeth Teal Hattaway's son.

16. Walter Hattaway was Lacy and Elizabeth Teal Hattaway's youngest son.

17. Preston Miller. Although not officially related to the Hattaway family at this time (1884), three of Preston Miller's daughters would married grandsons of Lacy and Elizabeth Teal Hattaway. Nellie Miller married Oscar Cook, Nora Miller married Joe Wheeler Hattaway, and Bertha Miller married Lacy Lane Hattaway.

18. Eliza Hattaway was Lacy and Elizabeth Teal Hattaway's daughter-in-law. Eliza Susan Pate married Walter Hattaway in Coweta Co., GA in 1872.

19. Amanda Hattaway, also listed as Mandy Hattaway, was Lacy and Elizabeth Teal Hattaway's daughter-in-law. Amanda Jane Mapp married Emanuel Hattaway in Campbell Co., GA in 1856.

20. Martha Garrett was Martha Cash, wife of Lemuel Garrett, and a sister to Mary Cash Hattaway. Martha Garrett died 6 weeks before her sister and is buried next to Mary Cash Hattaway at Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery.

Distribution of the estate amongst the heirs:
Approximately 5% ($78.65) was received by descendents of Naomi Hattaway and Meshack Teal. It appears that Naomi died before her mother, Elizabeth Teal Hattaway. Because her sister, Eliza Cook, who also pre-deceased their mother, heirs received her full portion, it may be that Lacy and Elizabeth Teal Hattaway advanced Naomi some money to relocate after her husband, Meshack Teal, was hanged in Campbell Co., GA in 1856.
Naomi and Meshack's oldest daughter, Nancy Ann Elizabeth Teal, who married John Milner Carden, received the most, $19.70.
Her younger siblings each received $19.65. J. R. Teal was John R. Teal, born about 1850; Keturah F. Ivey, was Katurah Teal, who married William Ivey in 1868; Malissa A. Cook was Malissa Teal, who married Thomas Cook.
Approximately 15% ($255.20+$42.50) was received by Luther Cook as guardian for his minor children by Eliza Hattaway: Oscar, Seteria, Magnolia, and Odessa Cook. This total of $297.70 was slightly less than Eliza Cook's older brothers and sisters.
15% ($299.90) was received by Mary Hattaway Teal.
15% ($299.90) was received by Emanuel Hattaway.
Approximately 5% ($87.40) was received by Walter Hattaway for his sister, Elizabeth Vaughn. Since Walter's percentage was larger than any of his brothers or sisters, he might have bought out part of his sister's inheritance. Elizabeth Hattaway married first to William Mapp, who died at the end of the Civil War or shortly afterward. She remarried to a Mr. Vaughn between 1870 and 1884 and moved. She may have been living in Van Zandt Co., TX in 1884-1885.
25% ($512.40) was received by Walter Hattaway.
15% ($299.90) was received by David Hattaway.
3% ($42.50) was received by Pernina Teal Carter
It is not known if the Rapes (H.C. and R.D.) listed were related, but George Rape had married Mary Ann Teal in Henry Co., GA on Feb. 21, 1853.
1850 Census of Campbell Co., GA, dwelling ͝:

Mary Ann, age 15, born in GA
Charlotte, age 12, born in GA
Elen J., age 10, born in GA
