Some time after their marriage in 1872, Rebecca and Doc moved to Cleburne County, Alabama, where Doc was a schoolteacher. He died in 1882, leaving Rebecca with 5 small children. Her mother, Mary Hattaway Teal, visited on her way to Texas and Rebecca packed up everything and moved with her. Mary and Rebecca settled in east Texas around Elmo, Van Zandt County, where Mary's sister, Elizabeth Hattaway Mapp Vaughn, and her family had been living.

About 1908, Rebecca moved to Young Co., TX
