1860 Census and 1870 Census:
Walter's place of residence is not known. His brother Emanuel Hattaway stated that he had lived in Alabama in 1857 and 1858 before returning to GA. Walter may have also moved to Alabama during this time. His sister, Naomi Hattaway Teal's husband, Meshack Teal, was hanged in Campbell Co., GA in December, 1856. Where Naomi moved to is still a mystery, but her daughter, Katurah Teal, married William Ivey in Cleburne Co., AL on March 9, 1868.
The 1860 Census of Coosa Co., AL, (where many Teal's also moved), lists in the 2nd Division, Mount Olive Post Office, dwelling ³, family ³page 248:

Campbell Co., GA Deed Book "H", page 518, November 24, 1876: Walter purchased 7 acres of land from W. J. Duggan for $50 in lot of the 7th district at the southeast corner of the lot line at Walter's apple orchard running north by the road between him & Duggan to the hickory tree.
Campbell Co., GA Will Book "B", pages 235 and 236, October 18, 1898: State of Georgia, Campbell County. Last Will and Testament of Walter L. Hattaway.
I, Walter L. Hattaway of said state and county, being of sound and disposing mind and memory do make this my last will and testament.
Item 1. I wish my executrix and executors as soon as possible after my death to sell one hundred acres of land more or less known as the Meginens place, proceeds of said sale of said land to be for the benefit of widow and minor children.
Item 2. I will Walter J. Hattaway, my son, the remaining part of the green land except (12 1/2) twelve and one half acres of said green land lying west of my home place.
Item 3. I will Eliza Ann Odom ($10.00) ten dollars.
Item 4. I will that all the balance of my property and estate to be kept undivided until the youngest child, Gene Gorman Hattaway, become of age, and then all of my children becomes joint heirs.
Item 5. I do hereby appoint Eliza S. Hattaway and Walter J. Hattaway and Lacy L. Hattaway, executrix and executors of this my will.
In testimony whereof I have hereto set my hand this the 18th day of October 1898. Walter L. Hattaway (his mark) Signed and published by Walter L. Hattaway as his last will and testament in the presence of the undersigned who subscribed our names hereto as witnesses at the instance and request of said testator, and in his presence and us in the presence of each other this the 18th day of October 1898.

Before me personally appeared L. N. B. Cook, T. C. Russell, named as two witnesses to the within writing purporting to be the last will of Walter L. Hattaway, who being duly sworn, deposes and says that they with W. W. Hattaway, did on the 18th day of October 1898, attested as witnesses the within writing in the presence of Walter L. Hattaway, who in their presence voluntarily signed and published the same as his last will and that the said Walter L. Hattaway was at the time of said attestation and signing of sound and disposing mind and memory.

Note: Walter L. Hattaway must have been in serious condition, as he normally signed his name rather than a mark. He died within two weeks of his will, leaving his 49 year old widow Eliza with several minor children including Alvin age 16, Effie age 13, Owen age 10, and Gene age 2. Witnesses included his sister's widower, Luther Napoleon Bonaparte Cook, and his nephew Joe Wheeler Hattaway, also known as William Wheeler Hattaway.
