Military service:
John survived the Bataan Death March and 3 1/2 years as a prisoner in Japan's Osaka Prison Camp after being captured in the Philippines in 1942. He was awarded bronze star medals in WWII and the Korean War and retired from the military as a master sergeant in 1962.

He was a member of Palmetto Masonic Lodge #74.
