WEN DODD HATAWAY:
1920 Census of Campbell Co., GA, Rivertown, page 11B, dwelling #64, family #68, roll T625_240:
Hattaway, Owen D., age 30
Allie, age 27
Mary J., age 7

Raymond R., age 2/12.

About 1923, Owen and Allie left Georgia and moved to Upthegrove Beach, FL, where Owen's sister, Eliza, and her husband, Rob Upthegrove, lived. About the time of the devastating 1928 hurricane, they lived at Sand Cut and Port Mayaca. Owen worked for Bessemer Corporation at Port Mayaca and lived across from what became Port Mayaca Cemetery as a result of the 1928 hurricane. Thousands of people killed during the hurricane were brought in by rail car and buried in a mass grave. Owen and Allie were given cemetery lots there as one of his benefits as an employee of Bessemer. About 1929 or 1930, Owen and Allie moved to Indiantown, FL, where they would live the rest of their lives.

Owen brought the first schoolbus (a truck he had modified) to Indiantown and was a trustee and member of Martin County (FL) School board, serving some 25 years in that capacity. For a period of many years, he operated restaurants (first the "Seminole Cafe" then "Jewel's Restaurant"), a grocery store, Hataway Feed Store, and several gas stations in Indiantown before retiring at age 81. He served as Justice of the Peace in Indiantown for many years and was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 1283 in Stuart. He was also a charter member of Dunklin Memorial Baptist Church.
