Born in Spartanburg, SC, James followed in the footsteps of his cousin, Miles Rainwater, & became a minister. He later moved to Campbell Co., GA and served many churches in the area, including Ramah Baptist where he is buried. He and his wife, Polly Ann Mason, had the following children: Z. Miles, Joseph, and Benjamin Rainwater, Emily (m. Pinckney Golightly), Clariah (m. Ebenezer Sanders), Sarah (m. Jesse Moseley), Elizabeth (m. Pierce Sewell), Christina (m. Green Sanders), Frances (m. Ephraim Miller), Martha (m. John Segar), and Catherine Eliza (m. James Luck).
