My great great grandfather, Carl Heinrich Julius (Louis) LEUNIG, an underground miner, arrived in South Australia on 1 January 1855, having emigrated from Clausthal in the mountainous Harz region of the Kingdom of Hannover. I have traced the LEUNIG (LEINIG, LEINI) tree back to the marriage of Christoph. Otto LEINI and Anna Margr. PUTSCHER on 24 December 1704 in Clausthal. I also have a fairly complete list of their descendants for 150 years within Germany and America, and almost a complete list within Australia, but have not been able to trace the LEINI name beyond this. Christoph. Otto was not in Clausthal for the census of 1699.

Louis LEINIG, by then LEUNIG, married Luise Henriette HOLZIEGAL (known as Emma MEYER, but born ZIRKLER illegitimately, and known as WUSTEFELD, but that is another story) in Burra Burra, South Australia in 1855, and within a few years had relocated to the Maryborough region, Victoria, Australia, where they raised Emma's children from her first marriage, Carl and Minna (Wilhelmina) and their own children, Mary and Adolph, while prospecting for gold.
