On the 1860 PA Philadelphia census, Gottshalk was listed as a cabinet maker. On the 1870 PA Philadelphia census, he worked for the railroad as a railroad agent. On the 1880 PA Philadelphia census, his occupation is listed as a bottle dealer. He continued this occupation through the 1900 PA Philadelphia census.
