Notes for Ricky Calvin Baker:
I woke up about 12:00 midnight on the 12th of January. I had to go to the bathroom.I did go but when I thought I was done, my water had broke.I was living with my mama and daddy at the time cause Richard was in Viet Nam.Sammy slept in the room with them and I didn't want to wake him and daddy up but I didn't want to get up cause I didn't want to get water everywhere. I called and called mama and finally I just had to yell at her before she could hear me.Daddy had cooked steaks that night before Laura left to go to Hawaii to meet Danny. We had taken he to Castell to her mother's cause they were taking her to theairport the next morning on the 12th.Anyway, mama finally came in there and when I told her what had happened to insisted I get up and I kept saying no, I don't want the water to get everywhere. She called Mildred her first cousin that is a nurse at the Sheppard Hosptial in Bunet where my doctor was.She told her to go ahead and bring me in.So we went and got Mimi and was on our way to Burnet.I was there 24 hours and 45 minutes before he was finally born.My daddy came when he got off work and mama and Mimi went to eat and while they were gone daddy came over and took my hand and said if I needed to squeeze just do so. I got sick and threw up on his hand. I felt so bad cause he has such a weak stomach.
When they rolled Ricky out to go to the nursery he turned his head and looked right at mama, Mimi and daddy. He had such big eyes. Mimi said he was checking them out to see if he wanted to go home with that bunch or not. That night mama stayed with me and I woke up about 4:00 am and told Mildred I wanted to see my baby. She brought Ricky in for me to hold. I was so proud of him. He was so tiny.He weighed 5 pounds and 15 ounces and was 19 1/2 inches long. That morning my papa came to see us and he always looked and feft of the baby's head. He told me " Kat, he's got a pretty head ".He was born on Wednesday and we went home of Friday.
Ricky was always small but the was always very strong and not afraid of anything.I could hold one end of the broom and Richard the other and Ricky would swing on the handle. He could pull himself up too on it.I always wanted to put him in gymnastics but never could afford it. I thought he would be really good at it.
One night I was fixing to go to sleep when Richard was in the Army and was in Viet Nam. I got a call and it was Richard telling me had gotten a drop to come home earlier than expected. I went in and just talked and talked to Ricky to tell him his daddy was coming home. He wasa little over a month old when his dad came home.
Ricky and I spent many nights and days alone when we moved to Kansas where Richard was stationed after he came home from Nam.I was so glad that I had him. Then Richard went to Germany and it was 8 months before Ricky and I went over there. It was a long flight but we made it.I always thought he was going to be a dentist because all the way to Germany he would say mouth and I would have to open my mouth and he would stick his fingers in there and feel of my teeth. He would also open and close a locket that Aunt Myrt had given me for a going away present that had Ricky and Richard's picture in it. He would say daddy and Icky. That's right, Icky, not Ricky. All the way to Germany open my mouth feel my teeth, then open the locket and say daddy, Icky. He was really a good boy on the trip. I could not have asked him to be any better. He was a top traveler.I was so proud of him.
