4.IRA4 PORTIS (JOHN FLOYD ABIAS3, GEORGE2, JOHN1) was born November 17, 1777 in Ransoms Bridge, Franklin, NC, and died September 08, 1825 in Suggsville, Clarke Co., AL.He married (1) MARY ANN GOODWIN October 15, 1805 in Nash County, NC, daughter of THEOPHILUS GOODWIN and NANCY.He married (2) MARY ELIZABETH MARSH April 20, 1820.
Notes for IRA PORTIS:
The youngest child of John and Sarah, he received one cow and calf, and one sow and pigs from his father's will.In addition, after the death of his mother, he was to receive the "old tract" of 21 acres, the family residence purchased originally by his father from Richard and Amey Ransome.Ira's tombstone erected by his son states that he was born in 1777.Since Ira was represented in Court by a guardian it would seem that the suit was initiated before he reached his majority (came of age) in 1798.
After the birth of Ira and Mary Ann's eighth child on 9 Sep 1818, the family moved to the area of Clarke Co., AL which later became Suggsville (platted in 1821).Soon after arrival, Mary Ann died on 17 Jan 1819, possibly the move was too rigorous for Mary Ann having just had a child.
In 1820, he remarried Mary Elizabeth Marsh, probably one of the three children of Edmund and Rhoda Marsh.Edmund died 1834 and his widow Rhoda married a second time to John Hearin on 14 Dec. 1835.
Ira served as a judge in some of the early courts of Clarke Co, head in Clarkesville. He is also credited as one of the organizers of the town of Suggsville, platted and recorded formally in 1821.

"Sir:
I advise you from the papers in the Rev. War pension claim, R. 8598, it appears that Kiziah Ransom alleged that her husband, Richard Ransom, was raised in Franklin Co., NC, from which place he volunteered for three months as a private, no officers stated, and was in the siege of Charleston; that his next term was for three months as Lieutenant under Captain John or Harry Meekins, during which he was captured at the battle of Camden, and imprisoned three months before making his escape; and that some time after his return home, he raised a company and served as Captain under Colonel Loury, for three months.
There are no dates of enlistment or discharge given.
Richard Ransom married in Franklin County, NC October 10, 1784, Kiziah, daugther of John Portiss.
Soldier dies July 22, 1827, his age is not on record; and his widow Kiziah Ransom applied for pension November 15, 1838 at which time she was a resident of Rutherford County, TN, aged seventy-five years.
The claim was never allowed, for the reason that the claimant failed to furnish the required proof of her husband's services as alleged.
Kiziah Ransom died March 22, 1841, and the following children survived her in 1852:Robert (oldest child), aged sixty-seven years, who married February 14, 1828, Mary Harris; Athelston; Lemuel, aged about fifty-three years; Henry, aged about fifty years; Alfred; Polly; Sarah (youngest child), aged forty-eight years, who married October 30, 1931, his name is not stated.Other children referred to were John and Benjamin who died prior to 1852."Source:Sworn statements found in the Rev.
