Notes for R
OBERT LEERIGHT:
[Information from "The children of John Leewright Jr. and Elizabeth Coppedge" by Betty Broadbent]
Robert Leewright, eldest son of this couple to whom his grandfather John Leewright Sr. deeded all his possessions in 1787, soon sold this property in Prince William Co., Va. and removed to Frederick Co.. He married Elizabeth Price.
During his years in Frederick Co., he made purchases and sales of real estate and "on 30 Oct. 1833, Robert and Elizabeth his wife, deeded to William P. Leewright for the sum of $1.00, provided he takes upon himself the obligation and bond to Seth Mason etc. deeds, negroes George, Rebecca, Peggy, Philip, Thomas, Albert, Louise, Molly, Nanacy, Nibs, Lewis, George, Benjamin, Charles, and Aron, one Sorrel mare called Rock, one bay mare called Nell, dark bay mare called Sall, black mare, a small saddle mare, sorrel horse, wagon and gears, for five horses, one horse cart, all my plows and harrows, all my household goods, furniture, and kitchen furniture, also about 150 bushels of wheat in pen, corn now in the field, crop of wheat now sown, 21 head of hogs, thirteen sheep and four cows," Bk. 62, p 94
No will, no further deeds, no orphan court records etc. Robert Leewright was 63 or 65 years of age at this time, and it would seem that he used this deed instead of a will.
Robert Leewright's name has been found as a witness to a marraige in the Quaker records. No record of his sons' marraiges were found. They may have been married in church, as legal marraiges were too high priced.
His sons removed to Ky. and from there to Franklin Co., Mo. The 1850 and 1860 census lists John Steptoe Lewright and William Price Lewright as substantial residents, eith families and slaves of the above county.
Colored persons who have probably taken the name of their master at the time of the emancipation of the slaves are found in the records.
