The Daniel Webster Lewis FamilyUpdated November 23, 2005 | The Bible of Mrs. Adeline Viola Walton Lewis indicates that John Lewis of Norfolk, Virginia was the father of Daniel Webster Lewis. Daniel was a product of the union of John Lewis and Ellen Jones, and also was born in Norfolk, Virginia. General feedback from existing family memebers as well and census data indicate Daniel was mulatto. John Lewis in all probability was caucasian, while Ellen Jones was of African-American ancestry. The 1880 census shows only 1 John Lewis in the Norfolk area residing close to what appears to be the family of Ellen Jones, and as it happens, he is caucasian. Daniel Webster Lewis was a member of the galant 369th infantry popularly known as the "Harlem Hellfighters," for their persitince in pushing back the German troops during WWI. The unit was awarded the "Croix de Guerre" (with bronze star) for bravery and the preservation of democracy by the French government. Daniel married Adeline Viola Walton of Newark, New Jersey on October 25, 1922 in New York, NY. The Walton's enjoy a rich history in the state of New Jersey that has been traced as far as 1810. Adeline's grandfather Isaiah Walton bravely served his country in the Civil War. Since the state of New Jersey did not allow blacks to enlist in the service, Isaiah's conviction was so strong in support of abolishing slavery he traveled to Connecticut to enlist in the army. In this family's history 2 names have been passed through this each generation for nearly two hundred years; they are the names Adeline and Edward. The genealogy of this family is a work in progress. Some errors may exist, but in time shall be corrected. |
