He signed his name Ben. Lewis on two known documents:
On his father-in-law John NIckell's estate settlement 27 Aug 1774.
Land Owners 1777 Petition for the formation of Greenbrier County VA, etc.
However, he made his mark on the marriage bond of his daughter, Catherine [Greenbrier Co, Catherine Lewis to Michael Newhouse]
Burial place: Quoting from Virgil A Lewis ca 1910 letter to Charlie Bracewell: "BENJAMIN LEWIS . . . came to what was afterwards Mason County (WV) in 1790, and built his cabin in Yeager's Field within a few hundred yards of where our old uncle CLENDENIN STEVENSON formerly lived. A pile of stone used in his chimney and back wall still mark the site of his cabin. He lived to an old age and is buried on the top of a high hill just back of Locust Grove School House."
Claude Mcdermitt, grandson of Benjamin Thomas Lewis, phone conversation 11/11/2005: Locust Grove School House property is on Sassafras Road, east of West Columbia, where Claude now lives.
It should be noted that Benjamin Lewis was about age 40 when he married Susannah Nickell. There was room for a prior marriage if the dates and ages are correct.
Larry Shuck: tax records show he moved to Kanawha County [that part now Mason Co] VA in 1796. Children of his & families also moved there.
The Sons of the American Revolution [SAR] accepted my membership based on this Benjamin Lewis. My SAR National Number is 152209, State Number 8213 [Ohio, Cincinnati Chapter], dated July 26, 1999. Proof of lineage is complete. Proof of Service is based on "preponderance of evidence" - researcher Alice Gordon wrote the National Archives for Service Records of Benjamin Lewis who served under James Henderson, who was the Captain of Militia in the area where our Benjamin lived. The Archives returned two documents for "Lewis, Benjamin, Private." There were only 3 Benjamin Lewis's extant in the area: This Benjamin, his son Benjamin and his brother john's son Benjamin. The son and nephew were too young.
This is the great-grandfather of Virgil Lewis. Virgil Lewis, lawyer, educator, author, founder and first director of the West Virginia Department of Archives and History, Charleston WV, mistakenly identified this Benjamin Lewis as the son of Thomas Lewis who was the son of John Lewis "Founder of Staunton, VA". This caused Virgil to identify "John Lewis, Founder" as our direct ancestor, which is proven wrong. The Benjamin Lewis, son of Thomas, was actually William Benjamin Lewis. William Benjamin Lewis' marriage license named him Benjamin Lewis as did his father's Will. Maybe this is the name he went by? This is probably where Virgil picked up the error. William Benjamin was too young to have been our Benjamin Lewis' father. Virgil Lewis' family realized this was an error, but never found the solution to the lineage. [see copy of 1984 letter from his daughter Virginia to researcher and descendant Alice Gordon]
