Descendants of John Mathis

5. DANIEL2 MATHIS (JOHN1) was born September 07, 1723 in Oak Island, Burlington County, New Jersey26, and died Bet. 1764 - 1765 in East Florida. He married SOPHIA GAUNTT 1743 in Burlington County, New Jersey27, daughter of ZEBULON GAUNTT and SOPHIA SHOURDS. She was born July 10, 1723 in Springfield, BurlingtonCounty, New Jersey, and died 1761.

Notes for D
ANIEL MATHIS:
"In 1751 Daniel was master of the 15 ton sloop Hannah, built at Biramin the province of New Jersey, and in 1752 the Hannah was on a voyage from New York to Port Bath in North Carolina. They moved to North Carolina and then South Carolina. Sophia is buried in the Quaker cemetery in Camden, SC She shares a stone with her daughter Sarah Mathis Kershaw. A Daniel "Mathini" applied for a grant of 300 acres in Crave County and then memorialized this claim in 1764. In this claim was Mathew was misread as Mathini. This land was on the Wateree river bordering lands of Joseph Kershaw and others of the Camden area. Daniel Mathis also applied for and memorialized a grant of 300 acres on the Savannah River in Granville County. He died in East Florida where he had gone to buy lands." From "The Mathis Family of Little Egg Harbor," Murray and Jean Harris, G.C.H.S., 1987 p 95. Daniel and his wife were members of the Society of Friends, but it appears that they married contrary to Friends' discipline. Daniel, was a Sea Captain and followed the West India trade, carrying lumber for his father from Egg Harbor to the West India Islands, and on his return bringing produce from those Islands. There is a great probability that John Mathis had the vessel built which his son Daniel sailed. There was a large number of vessels owned in Egg Harbor required a considerable number of men for their management, so that many of the inhabitants of the place are seamen. All of them who are prudent make a comfortable living, and many of them accumulate property thereby. A lad who goes on board one of the ships and had a active and attentive to his business, may soon became a competent sailor, and at no distant day rise to be money making Captains. There are many instances of this kind among the seamen of Egg Harbor. Those who are not fortunate as to attain to Captaincy, usually get good wages for their part they perform.

Notes for E
LI MATHIS:
Eli was a Justice of the Peace, and the first proselyte of Methodism in Egg Harbor. In 1767 he purchased the sawmill at the head of the west branch of the Bass river at a sheriff's sale. In the same year he sold the mill tract, containing twenty-one acres, and also one-half of the mill to his brother, Micajah Mathis Sr. His house was a home and a preaching station for the ministers of that denomination until it was burned by the British during the war for independence in the year 1778. He was a leading patriot of those times and was interested in privateering. The British found two Brigs, prizes, anchored at his landing and his home deserted, hence they burned them all. He and his family with all they could move together with all his horse cattle and hogs had sought a safer retreat in a dense swamp a few miles father from the shore. He had four sons, and the tradition says, he was practical and named them to rhyme.
