John Bruce was born 1794 in Wilkes, County. North Carolina, and died 1852 in Illinois. He married Mary Ann Phipps on 1818 in Illinois, daughter of Loch Phipps and Jane B. Bivan.
Notes for John Bruce: Notes for JOHN BRUCE: John was born in Wilks County., NC. During the War of 1812, in 1815, he served 3 months under Captains Carlton's Company. Peace came, and shortly after, his father's death.
As the prairie islands beckoned, John answered their invitation. In 1818, as Illinois was becoming a new state, Mary Ann Phipps was to become the new bride to John Bruce. As Democrat Shadrack Bond was elected first Governor of ILL. in 1818, life was good to the Bruces, maybe that is why many of them are Democrats today.
John and Mary Ann had one son; if more children we do not know. (Per Gallatin County History Book)
I have been unable to find any Bruces in the 1840 Gallatin County Census records and only one (Benjamin) in the 1830 Gallatin County Census Records.
I do find a John Bruce in the 1830 White County. Census with 1 male 5-10 and 1 male 30-40 and 2 females 0-5, 2 females 5-10 and 1 female 30-40. Next door to him is a Mary Bruce with no males in household and 1 female 10-15 and 1 female 60-70. Do not know relationship except possibly his mother.
1840 White County. IL Census a John Bruce with 2 males 5-10, 1 male 10-15, 1 male 15-20 and 1 male 40-50. 1 female 0-5, 2 female 10-15, 2 female 15-20 and 1 female 40-50.
Some differences are noted between 1830 and 1840 on the girls. Natural progression of 2 females to 5-10 is skipped in 1840 unless both died or error in census?
Listed in 1850 Gallatin County. Census in HH 53.
Adkin Cemetery lists John Bruce 1794-1852 wife Mary 1803-1855; John N. 1833-1908 wife Abigail 1833-1908; son Willie 1863-1883; William J. 1831-1886. Other records show slight variations on some of the dates listed in the cemetery book. Not sure which are correct.
