Notes for T
HOMAS LIDDLE:
Data from transcripts of census records, historical notes, church records of Marriages & Baptisims, and other sources seem to indicate the strong possibility that Thomas and Margaret Liddle are the parents of Alexander and the grandparents Thomas J. Liddle.

From the "Descendants of Thomas Liddle" dated February 1993; Compiled by Christine Van Kleeck.

Thomas Liddle, son of (Father Unknown) and of (Mother Unknown), born 1780 in Roxburghshire, Scotland; died 24 May 1868 in Andes, Delaware Co., NY. He married (1) about 1804, to Margaret Acrchibald, daughter of Andrew Archibald and of Grace Hart; and married (2) after 1822, to Magdalene McCartney. Liddesdale, Scotland is the much contested district of the border and forms the wedge-like termination of Roxburghshire, Scotland, running a little into Dumfrieshire. This is probably where the Liddle ancestors picked up the name.

Bovina settlement was begun in 1792 and during the next 3 years many families from Conn. and Scotland located in the valleys. Thomas Liddle is one of nine early settlers. Thomas was a native of Scotland, who emigrated to this country in his youth and settled in Bovina, where he bought a tract of about 400 acres of land. He was for sometime Overseer of the Poor. Thomas was a Republican in politics, and, like his wife, a United Presbyterian in religion. Margaret Acrhibald was born in Scotland, married and came to America. On the voyage over her husband died and was buried at sea. After arriving in Bovina she married Thomas Liddle. (Source: Biographical Review of Leading Delaware Co. Citizens).

On May 10, 1815, the first church building in Bovina was raised to be known as the United Presbyterian Church of Bovina. Thomas and Margaret were included in the 36 members. On the first Tuesday of March 1820, the first town meeting for Bovina was held. Twenty-nine road districts were created and Thomas was named Overseer of Highways in his road district. (Source: History of Delaware Co. NY).

Information from Willie Olmstead, a great-great-great grandson of Thomas Liddle, shows the birth date for him as 1875 and settling in Bovina in 1796 at the age of 11.
