Notes for J
OHN MOORE:
The following is from the memorial paper of John Moore.

Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Washington
In Memoriam
Most Excellent Companion John Moore
Past Grand High Priest

To the Offiicers and members of the Grand Chapter of Washington; to all Chapters within its jurisdiction and to our companions of sister Grand Jurisdictions:

Companion John Moore

Past Grand High Priest of the Most Excellent Grand Chapter Royal Arch Masons of Washington, departed this life April 26, 1926, at Orting, Washington.

He was born in Ohio, October 1, 1838. But little is known of his early life. He received a common school education, married in Illinios to Lydia Monroe, lived in Minnesota, where he served as a member of the School Board and City Council of the town where he resided, and was also elected Justice of the Peace. Removing to the State of Washington January 1886, he located on a farm in Adams County and served one term as County Commisioner. During the McKinley administration he served for several years as Inspector of Customs at Tacoma. He was a veteran of the Civil War, but we are unable to ascertain the details of his service.

He was made a Mason at Augusta, Illinios, sometime during the Civil War. He served as Master of some Lodge in Illinios or Minnesota. He affiliated with Sprauge Lodge No. 40 in 1887 and served as Master of that Lodge in 1888, 1889 and 1893, and continued a member until his death.

He received the capitular degrees in Augusta Chapter No. 72, Augusta, Illinois, in 1865. Mooving to Minnesota he became a member of Albert Chapter No. 31, located at Sleepy Eye, served that chaptter as High Priest. Removing to Washington he assisted in organizing Sprauge Chapter No. 6 at Sprauge, in 1886. He was offered the station of High Priest under the dispensation, but residing some distance in the country on a ranch felt it would not be doing justice to the Chapter to accept, althoughh was one of the active members in the organization. In 1888 he served as Captain of the Host, and in 1890 was High Preist.

In the Grand Chapter he served as Grand Master of the First Veil in 1888; Grand Royal Arch Captain in 1889; Grand Master of the Third Veil in 1891; Grand Principal Sojourner 1893; Grand Captain of the Host in 1894; elected Grand Scribe in 1895, and regularly advanced to Grand High Priest in 1898.

He received the Order of High Priesthood in 1878, in Minnesota. He affiliated in Washington in 1888, and frequently assisted in conferring the Order.

He became a member of Henrietta Chapter No. 8, Order of the Eastern Star, and was one of the representatives of that Chapter at the organization of the Grand Chapter of Washington in June, 1888. He was Worthy Patron of Henrietta Chapter in 1894.

Companion Moore was not a demonstrative man, but in a quiet, effective way proved himself worthy of the confidence and esteem of his Masonic brethern, and was one whom his companions delighted to honor.

He was marrieid to Lydia Monroe while living in Illinois. Several years ago he was called upon to mourn her departure from this life. He left surviving three sons and two daughters, viz.: Henry A. Moore, of Seattle, Washington; Edwin J. Moore, of Valleyford, Washington; Mrs. Ella M. Sutherland, Soldiers Summit, Utah; Charles A. Moore, Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Mrs. Lillian M. Shine, Spokane.

He was buried at Tacoma by Fairweather Lodge No. 82, with Past Grand Master W. A. Fairweather, a life long friend and brother, officiating as Worshipful Master.

"There is no death. An angel form Walks o'er the earth with silent tread;
He bears our best beloved things away And then we call them 'dead'."

As a mark of respect to his memory let this memorial be read in each Chapter, proper record thereof made in the minutes, and the usual emblems of mourning displayed for thirty days.
